Publisher's summary

Deep in the steaming jungles of Paraguay, Aimee Weir is in trouble. The petrobiologist has found what she was looking for - a unique microorganism in a natural gas deposit - but it proves to be more destructive than anyone could have imagined. A contagion is striking down all in its wake. The camp is quarantined, but workers start to vanish in the night.

Is it fear of contamination - or has something far more lethal come to the surface? Something that has been trapped beneath the miles of stone, waiting... for us.

Alex Hunter - code name Arcadian - and his Hotzone All-Forces Warfare Commandos must be dropped in to the disaster area to do whatever it takes to stem the outbreak. It has been a year since Aimee has seen Alex; she thought she had left him for good. Now she needs him more than ever.

In the sweltering jungles of South America, the Arcadian must learn to master his violent inner demons for this rescue mission to have any chance of success. But can he survive long enough to confront the danger that threatens the very survival of mankind?

Critic reviews

"Greig Beck returns to the world of Alex Hunter with great gusto. As with the other books there’s fantastic research woven into the story and it seems Greig really loves to throw together facts from all over the place and mix them with a generous dollop of action and what-if. It’s a winning combination [and] what gives this story real depth and interest long after the current threat is put to rest, and it’s what will make me rush out to get book four. This Green Hell is a smart, delightful read with a big heart. Four Stars." (Keith Stevenson, publisher and editor, Coeur de Lion Books)
“Danger, disappearances and contagion follow Dr Aimee Weir’s important discovery in the Paraguayan jungle. Author Beck piles on the action and suspense. In a word: steamy!” ( Gold Coast Bulletin)
"Greig Beck is Clive Cussler meets Matthew Reilly – Violent, visceral and very, very good fun" ( Australian South Coast Register)

Exciting plot

As good a book as its prequel. Look forward to the next one. I wish Amy weren’t so pushy and demanding.

Meh

Really pushing the limits here. Black slime that turns out to be cellular beings that are intelligent. Colony creatures that have been living miles under ground for eons. Okay.

Totally HOOKED! Actually losing sleep over these!

Any additional comments?

You, Greig, have a great imagination that is right up there with the best of the adventure writers. And the narrator, Sean, is perfect for your stories.

Dear Listener, listen to the first one of the series before this one. I must admit I skipped the second one but will go back and listen to it (I ordered the 4th one today!). I just wanted to keep Amy and Alex together, but being addicted to Alex and the gift of Greig's writing, well..I will do them in order..and you need to..they don't read independently in my opinion, but you can and still get a thrill of a story! I think you'll lose sleep too!

Creepy, Suspenseful, Fast Moving

I enjoy the Alex Hunter novels. This one was creepier & scarier than the others. I caught myself crying out loud a cpl times during intense moments. Good thing I was alone and it was daytime. Recommended.

Better monster, better Alex, smoother story

This was a much better story than books 1 or 2... mainly because the monster was a bit more realistic (and the monster here was different from those in the first two books, which were very similar to each other) and the non-monster storyline (i.e. the search for gas deposits) was believable. Alex Hunter was also more believable than he was in book 2 where he brushed on the edge of supernatural (yes, he did here too, but it was a *bit* more understated).

There really isn't much else to say. If you read the first two books and liked them, you should like this one at least as much. If you didn't read the first two, well...I don't think you really need to in order to follow this story, it is pretty much standalone, although Alex is a recurring character. There is no sex, I don't recall any swearing, but there is some intentional gore (which I didn't think was as over-the-top as intended).

Beick has smoothed out a lot of the rough edges and I am planning to read the next book in the series. The story is wrapped up here (no cliff-hanger), but the future of Alex Hunter might be questionable...

entertaining narrator

I always enjoy listening to Mr Mangans narrative style. his sometimes bizarre pronounciation of common words is entertaining and adds flair to the story. I also suspect that he enjoys a few drinks while he reads. his slurred speech becomes
more apparent as his narration progresses.

This is a good special forces book series with a little sci-fi twist to it.
