Publisher's summary

From the blockbuster New York Times bestselling author of Look Again comes a novel that makes you question the nature of evil: is it born in us or is it bred?

Bennie Rosato looks exactly like her identical twin, Alice Connolly, but the darkness in Alice's soul makes them two very different women. Or at least that's what Bennie believes, until she finds herself buried alive at the hands of her twin.

Meanwhile, Alice takes over Bennie's life, impersonating her at work and even seducing her boyfriend in order to escape the deadly mess she has made of her own life. But Alice underestimates Bennie and the evil she has unleashed in her twin's psyche, as well as Bennie's determination to stay alive long enough to exact revenge.

Bennie must face the twisted truth that she is more like her sister Alice than she could have ever imagined, and by the novel's shocking conclusion, Bennie finds herself engaged in a war she cannot win—with herself.

Critic reviews

“Van Dyck moves smoothly between the viewpoints of the opposing siblings, juggles the quick pacing of their contest of wit and wills, and emphasizes the story's wry humor.” —AudioFile

“Reader Jennifer Van Dyck makes Alice come alive in all her nastiness, and we're glad the plot leaves room for a sequel.” —Winston Salem Journal

WHAT HAPPENED?!?!

How in gods name do you not bring back Barbara Rosenblat?!?!?! The quintessential voice of all these great characters. This narrator's Italian accent sounds like a drunk Russian with a speech impediment! Can't even listen to the next series. What a colossal blunder to not bring her back!

Think Twice

Story starts out strong but after the restaurant scene at Roux’s, the story turned absurd. Very disappointed.

Not my favorite

Having grown up in a small Italian town in Pennsylvania I have always enjoyed the Rosato Dinunzio series of books as much ch for the Italian American banter as for the story itself. All of the earlier books in this series had excellent readers that enhanced the story. Unfortunately this audible book had a different reader that, for me at least, detracted from the overall experience. I cannot say for sure how much of my dislike came from the reading alone or if the story itself was not the author’s usual quality. I would recommend reading it in print rather than listening to this version.

good not great.....

Having never read the author, and purchased after listening to the free excerpt, it was what was promised, a serviceable, interesting listen...not great, but good enough (especially after my last two clunkers!)to keep me interested and the annoyance level was minimal....I found the narration fine, the story had enough twists and turns to keep me going and it entertained! I might even listen to it again sometime...

Disappointing close after multiple excellent predecessors

The final book of the Rosato & Associates series is a huge let down after the entertaining previous books. The prior books read as a heartfelt effort to explore the various characters of this series. They are hugely entertaining with robust characters, witty with fast pacing.

This book read as if it were written to complete Ms. Scottoline’s book contract, perhaps under a deadline that Ms. Scottline wishes she’d not agreed to. The characters flatline under the effort to advance the long running plot line. The story is weighed down by the ridiculously painful plot devices used to close out the series.

Ms. Scottoline is very talented and I’ll read more of her other books. Still this was just such a sad close to an otherwise excellent series.

Suspenseful!

I enjoyed this very much. There were some times when I told the characters they were being stupid, but the twists and turns kept the story very interesting! Good book!!
