Publisher's summary

Cass Adams is crazy, and everyone in Deacon, Kansas, knows it. But when her good-for-nothing husband, Roland, goes missing, no one suspects that Cass buried him in their unfinished koi pond. Too bad he doesn't stay there for long. Cass gets arrested on the banks of the Spring River for dumping his corpse after heavy rain partially unearths it.

The police chief wants a quick verdict - he's running for sheriff and has no time for crazy talk. But like Roland's corpse, secrets start to surface, and they bring more to light than anybody expected. Everyone in Cass's life thinks they know her - her psychic grandmother, her promiscuous ex-best friend, her worm-farming brother-in-law, and maybe even her local ghost. But after years of separate silences, no one knows the whole truth. Except Roland. And he's not talking.

Surprisingly enjoyable

I found my self enjoying this book beside that fact it not my type of genre. The story is about a women who " they say is crazy " kills her husband and everyone in town has their own version as to why. The story is mostly of pov of others thoughts and the sins or guilt or even a bit of crazy in them lol. It has funny moments and sad ones too. The narrator did a good job. Must listen to see how it ends 😉

Intriguing story

This is a very intriguing story. It takes place in Kansas and has many twists and turns as the state has tornados. I thought the author did a good job with the character development and the narrator with the various characters. The pace of the book was steady, language relatively clean. Story would be PG rated. Absolutely fantastic !!!

This cozy is rather more intense than most, but that's not a bad thing. The characters are engaging and certainly memorable. As the plot unfolds, the reader becomes more and more involved in the story. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers. I'm glad that this offered on audiobookboom as I really enjoyed it!

So much to like!

Any additional comments?

There is much to like about this listen! It was a different type of a murder mystery with several POV's. It had layers and layers of backstory interspersed with moments of mirth and I could not stop listening.

Cass was the main character and being inside her head was a hoot (sometimes even in a good way.) Even without her meds, Cass had clarity that most "normies" did not. I won't give away the big reveal (I DID NOT see that coming!) but it made for a wonderful listen. My afternoon was well spent.

I liked the narrator, very much actually, but there was not enough variety between the voices at times so that even though the chapters where character specific, I sometimes had a hard time knowing the POV had changed. Still, there is so much to like about the listen that nothing should deter you!

Charming, Quirky and Oddly Noir

What a refreshing domestic thriller in this era of humorless, tropey, cranked-out 'Gone Girl' wanna be's! Gamble has written an engaging, charming and dark story peopled with fully fleshed characters in a clean, thoughtful prose.

This would have been 5 stars, but for some production issues. I loved reader Talmadge Ragan's work, but no one reader can carry off the five different voices needed for five different narrators. I was often confused as to which character was telling the story; in fact, I'm not certain it was 5.

A note to Audible; please consider rerecording this with five readers under your 'Originals' brand, retaining Ragan as Cass.

Very Enjoyable

Any additional comments?

This was a really fun, enjoyable and entertaining story from start to finish. It pulls you in from the first paragraph and keeps you listening until the end. This is a great story for the days when you want something a little lighter and a bit different.

Really there isn't much mystery/suspense since you know from the start who the "murderer" is. The mystery and suspense comes into play because of all the other things going on surrounding Cass and her husband Roland. Small town gossip and politics add to the telling of the story through multiple POV's.

Talmadge Ragan did an good job with the narration. Pleasant voice. Easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Her character voices are good but her male characters could use some work. You can't tell which character is speaking at times because there is not a lot difference between some of the male and female character voices. You can tell a slight difference in some of the characters from the slight accent or cadence she uses for them. Still her narration was very enjoyable and it fit the story. I would definitely listen to her narrate other books in the future.

Intriguing

I enjoyed listening to the book. The narrator was excellent and the story was well thought out. It was intriguing, funny at times as well as sad. I enjoyed the switching of point of views it helped me understand all the characters and what motivated them better.
