"not up to Lady Rose quality"

I adore Beaton/Chesney's campy Edwardian Lady Rose "cozies" and even enjoy Hamish MacBeth in small doses -- but I found this (my first Agatha Raisin) didn't have the same quality of humour, narrative or setting of either of the other series. While I was disappointed in this listen, I have enough faith in the author to try another -- so if, like me, you are new to Agatha Raisin, you might want to start elsewhere in the series.

    "Agatha always makes me smile"

The books are light listening. There is a plot. There is a story. But it is the character of Agatha Raisin that makes me keep coming back to these books.

    "Enjoyed the book and narrator"

It didn't take me long to get used to a different narrator, and I really enjoyed this book. The plot moves right along, and all of the favorite characters from the series are featured.

    "Love Agatha but with Donada"

I have had so much enjoyment from Agatha Raisin, her escapades and foibles. But I never knew how much Donada Peter's narration added to the experience. Whoever made the decision to change narrators - I hope they read this! When you have listened to a series with one voice that has done such a fantastic job, it is really difficult not to be distracted by an edition with new voices for the familiar characters. I was distracted and disappointed - therefore I gave this a 3.

    "Somewhat disappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have always been a Penelope Keith fan but her voice just does not go for Agatha - I found it very irritating

What could M. C. Beaton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She does go on a bit

Would you be willing to try another one of Penelope Keith’s performances?

    NO

    "Narrator"

I was disappointed that Penelope Keith was used as the narrator. Donada Peters does such an excellent job that it just isn't Agatha Raisin without her. The story was very good - but it was just not as enjoyable with a new narrator.

    "Easy-listening Cozy"

I really enjoy cozy mysteries, and have listened to many (though not all) of the Agatha Raisin series. This one stays true to form - Agatha is her usual brusque and bossy self. She does seem to have gained a degree of maturity and self-awareness over the course of the series, which is nice (especially since she is in her fifties).

The story was good; sort of predictable, and I did figure out "who-dunnit" before the climax, but that's fine. I enjoy these stories for their comfortable setting, familiar characters, and general lack of gruesome violence.

One problem that I had, and that sort of gave a bit of the plot away, was the narrator. She was mostly pretty good, actually - but she got a few things wrong; namely, doing a French accent for a character who we only "discover" later can speak French. So - basically, we, the listener, knew of this character's French connection prior to the other characters in the novel.

It was a good listen, though, and worth the credit if you are into British cozies.

    "Amusing"

This is very well read and the plot is thick with complexity. Agatha is a kick.
