Publisher's summary

If only I hadn't kidnapped the dog...but the ransom paid the mortgage.... Now I seem to be a private eye.... I shouldn't have listened to that ghost....

Meet Sarah Booth Delaney...an unconventional Southern belle whose knack for uncovering the truth is about to make her the hottest detective in Zinnia, Mississippi...if it doesn't make her the deadest. No self-respecting lady would allow herself to end up in Sarah Booth's situation. Unwed, unemployed, and over 30, she's flat broke and about to lose the family plantation. Not to mention being haunted by the ghost of her great-great-grandmother's nanny, who never misses an opportunity to remind her of her sorry state - or to suggest a plan of action, like ransoming her friend's prize pooch to raise some cash.

But soon Sarah Booth's walk on the criminal side leads her deeper into unladylike territory, and she's hired to solve a murder. Did gorgeous, landed Hamilton Garrett V really kill his mother 20 years ago? And if so, what is Sarah Booth doing falling for this possible murderer? When she asks one too many questions and a new corpse turns up, she is suddenly a suspect herself...and Sarah Booth finds that digging up the bones of the past could leave her rolling over in her grave.

Good Mistery, but...

This is a good cozy mystery, and by good I mean average. It’s a nice relaxing read and the narrator does a wonderful job, that is why I rated it so high.

What I liked was the fact that a completely hopeless woman, ready to settle for a marriage of convenience, which could also be called “legalized prostitution “, managed to find something to do with her life.

What I really disliked was the fact that she’s an awful friend, a stellar liar and a manipulator, with a conscience so thin you could call it anorexic.

Basically if it wasn’t for the narrator I would have asked to get my money back, that’s how much I disliked the female lead.

Mystery at its finest

What did you love best about Them Bones?

The character was transformed beautifully from a woman needing a job, to a young detective. The plot was excellent and this book became a fast read.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, the author did an amazing job keeping the pace fast and the plot thick so you didn't know what would happen next and the clues kept piling up.

Which character – as performed by Kate Forbes – was your favorite?

This book stayed with the main character throughout, and the narrator did an excellent job with her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I was constantly wanting people around me to stop talking so much so I could finish the audiobook.

Any additional comments?

Definitely a great read, a great mystery, and generally mystery is not my preferred subject (though I did love Sherlock Holmes). I will definitely pick up the next book in the series and continue watching the character grow.

Murder in Mississippi

This book started out kind of slow and I almost stopped listening. But I continued and really enjoyed it. There were several plot twists and so many well developed engaging characters. I truly enjoyed this book. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.

Could have been fun, but too slow

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story was fine, but the narration was so slow it made me sleepy. And I don't understand why the word "womb" was said sooooo many times. Weird.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

it was ok

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Forbes’s performances?

I don't think so.

Could you see Them Bones being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Maybe if it was for the "Murder, She Wrote" demographic.

Any additional comments?

This could have been more enjoyable if the narration was more lively.

I kept wanting to like it!

The only reason it got two stars is that I stayed with it as long as I did. Boring, Dull, Disappointing.
The reader Does not help, Very Bland! Maybe I am spoiled with some of the wonderful readers Audible gives us, but a boring reader does not help the book when it is already weak.

ENOUGH ABOUT HER WOMB!

First of all the narrator's pretty good.. other than that the stories so so and it's a bit slow. I got to the middle of chapter 22 before I had to quit subjecting myself to the non-stop blither blather about her womb.. you would think it was the main character in her book. I rarely ever give a bad review especially for one for specific character in the book.

The worst book ever

This is a stupid love story thinly disguised as a murder mystery. I found it poorly written, predicts le and offensive to women! The main character keeps maintaining that she is being led by her womb!

Amazing to the very end!!!

I didn't know what to expect as I started down this southern path of entertainment, but oh my! This enlightened journey, enhanced with soothing narration, has proven a great beginning to my summer reading. Rich in "color" with enough twists to make the bayou jealous, I can't wait to delve into book three! Yummmmmy Big Daddy Girl!
