Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Engrossing and brilliant

Nora Roberts is one of my favorite mystery writers. This story was so well written, so engrossing that I had a hard time letting days go by when I wasn't able to continue listening. I would have given 5 stars except for one problem. Call me old fashioned but I have a real aversion to language so frequently laced with, what I see as, both foul and unnecessary. There are better ways of communicating than a continuous stream of four letter words.

I wish it was possible to require that books have ratings much like rating a movie for the benefit of the viewer. More and more often I find that a book that promise to be a good read, ends up being so full of overly descriptive sex and the use of swear words to express emotion
I - and other readers - have to skip through so much of the narrative
In order to continue the story.

Hoping to be heard

amazing, breath taking.

What did you love best about The Witness?

It was better than wathcing it play out on the television. I actually skipped watching t.v. so that I could be still and see the characters that they so vividly described.

What other book might you compare The Witness to and why?

My first Mystery book, but I have already purchased another from Nora Roberts.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I bellieve she was the best possible reader for this book she was Abigail.

Elizabeth is an engaging character.

I wanted to know what she would do next. sometimes a bit too intellectual but kept your interest til the end.

Riveting!!

Great story and the narration was perfect. Julia Brought the character to life and was perfect for the role. I don't read Nora Roberts and picked this up as a whim and very glad I did.

New to Nora

Any additional comments?

I liked it, I also like the girl with the dragon tattoo ;) seems in some ways better for one there was 100% less rape... so that was good! Her name was even Elizabeth for crying out loud. But like I said I did like it and bought it because someone said it was like the girl with the dragon tattoo... so I can't really get too bent out a shape about it.

Takes a little to take off but WOW

So, at first I wasnt sure. I wasnt liking the lead female too much, seemed far fetched and unrealistic but I bet people like this do exist. But then it jumps up to an older her which I really like her character development. Anyways, just great book with characters that evolve, change, and grow.

My first Nora Roberts

Good stuff. "Fluffier" than I thought it (or Nora) would be. Guilty pleasure, easy read, author immerses herself in character background. Love Julia Whelan as a narrator, just heard A Fine Imitation by her, too. This book is just fun! I'd do another.
