Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to draw attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesn’t know what - and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.

Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

BRAVO!

What a story---What a performance!

This is one of the best audiobooks I've listen to. It's abridged, but so well edited one would never know there was a longer version. I think I prefer the abridged version because the Mafia assassination the 16 year old girl witnessed and other scenes of violence are no-doubt more detailed in the unabridged version. Julia Whelan's performance draws you into the story... it's as if you can see the scenes and feel the fear of the witness.

"The Witness" has much to recommend it: likable characters, humor, mystery, romance. I don't want to spoil anything; by not knowing what will happen next is part of the books appeal....I listened to it in one night. I was so caught up in Elizabeth/Abigail and Brook's story I didn't want it to end.

I highly recommend it!

Good story- just too much romance for my tastes

Too much romance for me, but I recommend it to those that like romance. Narration was good. I will get more abridged books.

A Tightly Wrapped Cliché !

So this girl is not only beautiful and stinking rich, but she also has a gorgeous body, is highly intelligent, speaks numerous languages, has an eidetic memory (but of course), cooks like a master chef and is a ninja with a gun and thus shoots with flawless grouping. Oh come on!!

This kind of teenage fantasy plot is nauseating!

The narration by Julia Whelan however is good. Give her a decent story to narrate and it will be a sure success.

Male bias

What did you love best about The Witness?

I really enjoyed the "I'm not a helpless female" angle.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes it was paced well.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She's a good reader.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but none are, have too much going on.

Any additional comments?

To males who might venture into Nora Robert's novels. This is a genre of story I enjoy but was pretty hesitant about doing a female author as I have found they tend to hugely overstate the physical abilities of a 100 pound female. In this book, she doesn't try. Everything the heroin does seems believable and in context. On the negative side the story is a bit shy of physical encounters although the story line is carried well without them.

The heated stuff is slanted from a woman's point of view but was fine for my male ears.

Nora Roberts does an excellent job of wrapping up the story and it was an enjoyable listen.

Too too juvenile

Any additional comments?

Apparently I wasn't familiar with Nora Roberts and simply got taken in by all the rave reviews. I tried to like the story but just couldn't hang with the teeny-bopper scene.

Wow!

Loved it! As a smart, logical, observant and sometimes overthinking problem solver; I couldn't stop listening! The narrator was awesome also. The voice inflections were nice. Good read!

I was hooked!

Decided the best way to get my early morning walks in was to listen to books on the apps. Love Nora Roberts, so I bought this audio version for my iphone. I walked the full 7 1/2 hours (not all in one day of course) that I listened to this book. Narrator Julia Whelan was awesome - I know the narration has a lot to do with it, and she did a fabulous job. I couldn't stop listening to the book. When it finished, I was really bummed. I wanted it to go on. I've been done with the book for a few weeks or more, and I *still* think about the book and the characters and wish there were more chapters to listen to. There were a few suspenseful parts that I couldn't shut it off. Some if it was a little dragged out, but not bad at all. I'd listen to it all over again, and probably will. If you like a little mystery, crime, romance - it's a good one. Highly recommend.

Took a different turn

I wasn't expecting so much of a love story but it still turned out to be a very interesting book. I enjoyed not exactly knowing where the plot was going to go.
