The best public defender in Prosper, South Carolina, Kendall had stumbled upon the town's chilling secret - and her marriage to one of the town's most powerful men has become a living hell. Now Kendall is a terrified mother trying to save her child's life...a reluctant witness who knows too much about an insidious evil...and a woman surrounded by forces that will stop at nothing to protect what is "theirs".

What the Critics Say

"This page-turner is a must on any summer beach reading list and a testament to Brown's gifts as a talented storyteller." (Today)
"The push-pull generated by John's memory loss and Kendall's terror sparks a sexual tension that is deftly and vividly consummated, and secrets keep popping out until the last page. Brown's forte is glitch-free, all-over-the-map plotting, and her take on white-trashy behavior pushes just the right buttons." (Publishers Weekly)

"could not get past two dvd's"

Holes in the story, what there was of it. The female character was unbelievable -- she has the chance to ditch the guy and doesn't in the beginning and we never know why for two more dvd's. I made it through two because there was no radio and we were driving.

She flees to the one place where someone will find her. She goes from one stupid small backwater town to another instead of going to the a city to "get lost". My husband and I talked over the book because we had to comment on the unbelievable things in this bad plot -- where were her editors? gads. Can't spoil the plot -- won't be hearing the end of it. She keeps laying her baby down and walking away from him???? Puhleeze. i want my money back!

    "Not bad"

I'm not a fan of deep southern accents. EVERY accent in this story was too similar in that way. Professional males were deep, other males had a country bumpkin sound, females were airy Southern Belle, brash southern or deep but not so deep as the men southern. There was NO ONE in the story from the Midwest? the east coast?

That being said the story was intriguing. I figured stuff out with the main characters just before it was revealed but even the last few hours and minutes revealed new info and details that enriched the plot. I liked that a lot. a bit too much swearing and the sex was too graphic for my liking but the story itself seemed well written.

    "Classic Sandra Brown story."

A typical Sandra Brown book, this mystery/romance was fairly good. If you’re a fan of SB you will like this book. My only complaint is that there is too much flashbacks in the story, which isn't my favorite style of writing. I would rather the character tell what happened than rehash it in flashbacks. Because of this I would give this book a 3.5 stars. There was not enough face time for the heroine and the hero, the back story was overwhelming for this book to really be enjoyable. The story does get better the second half of the book. My favorite book by Sandra Brown is "Envy." It was the first Sandra Brown book I read and I really enjoyed it. Narrator does a good job.

I can usually figure things out, but not this time. So many twists and turns and lots at the end that I never saw coming!

    "Classic Brown listen"
If you could sum up The Witness in three words, what would they be?

    inventive, sensitive, sexy

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witness?

when our hero has the baby in the bath with him. when the FBI agent covers the friend with a coat.

Which character – as performed by Joyce Bean – was your favorite?

This is one of Ms Bean finer performances. She has you right there in the room on this one. If you are a classic S.B. reader, then this is a must for you. The end will knock you out.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    "Becareful of What You Want"

    Any additional comments?

Enjoy this good classic, you will not be disappointed

    "Not her Best--Just okay"

I think I would have preferred just reading this one--maybe it would have been better. I wanted more suspense which I know I have read in many of Sandra Brown's (SB) books.

I say this every time I rate an audio--a narrator can make a break an audiobook. This narrator did not get that southern accent she was trying to achieve; I think she tried to hard. Also, not enough distinguishing between characters. But then I thought the story was a bit unbelievable as well--again not enough suspense. I am still going to listen to more of SB's books, but will think harder if this narrator is reading it (at least if the character needs to have a southern accent); she is fine otherwise.

    "so trite"

One of the worst books I've listened to. The narrator's voice of the main character is horribly simpy. The story is mainly predictable and boring.
