Publisher's summary

In this second installment of Carola Dunn's cozy mystery series set in 1923 England, plucky Daisy Dalrymple embarks on another assignment for Town and Country magazine and discovers that daffodil bulbs aren't all that's buried in a country estate's flower bed.

Feisty flapper Dalrymple is a breath of fresh air to the occupants of gloomy Occles Hall in Cheshire, among them her former school chum, wallflower Bobbie Parslow, and the thorny mistress of the manor, Lady Valeria. While photographing the barren ground behind the house, Daisy suspects someone has been digging amidst the soil's first green shoots, and promptly unearths the corpse of Grace Moss, the missing parlor maid. So begins a harrowing romp as the dead woman's shocking secret is revealed.

Critic reviews

"Set in a British manor house in 1923, this traditional charmer will please most everyone." (Library Journal)
"Manners (P.G. Wodehouse-style) and mystery get equal time in a low-keyed story with considerable charm." (Kirkus Reviews)

Please let the reader know if there is a primary gay character

I was enjoying the story but have chosen to not finish is as I feel that it should be revealed when a storyline has a gay character in the lead roles. I was wondering if this was the direction as the take worked it’s way through. I was right and just decided to not continue. I will try one more if Thai authors books and if it continues to be the norm I will delete the remaining books by her.

THE START OF EVEN MORE FUN AND ROMANCE.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES, I'VE READ THE ENTIRE SERIES AND DECIDED TO START MY AUDIOBOOK USE WITH A FAMILIAR FRIEND. ALTHOUGH THIS IS THE SECOND IN THE SERIES, IT PROVIDES JUST ENOUGH 'HISTORY' TO PUT YOU AT A VERY GOOD JUNCTURE. I ENJOY MYSTERIES, SERIES, NICELY WRITTEN AND RELAXING TALES = READ CAROLA DUNN AND HER DAISY DALRYMPLE SERIES.

What did you like best about this story?

IT'S RELAXING AND MOVES ALONG WITH ENOUGH 'MYSTERY' TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED.

Have you listened to any of Bernadette Dunne’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I HAVEN'T HEARD MS. DUNNE PREVIOUSLY, I AM NEW TO AUDIOBOOKS, BUT I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO READ ANOTHER BOOK SHE NARRATES, NICELY DONE AND SHE UNDERSTOOD THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

IT KEPT MY INTEREST, EVEN THOUGH I'D READ IT A WHILE AGO, AND I ENJOYED IT FROM BEGINNING TO END.

I love Daisy!

What did you love best about The Winter Garden Mystery?

I enjoyed this second installment because it was fun to see Daisy in a new locale. However some old friends pop by so it's the best of both worlds.

What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?

She differentiated each of the characters well. It was obvious who each character was & gave an excellent performance!

Any additional comments?

Looking forward to book 3! If you can, read them in order!

1920s, England, murder

1920s, England, family-dynamics, friendship, murder, murder-investigation, due-diligence, law-enforcement, situational-humor, verbal-humor, cosy-mystery*****

I found the audio on sale and Daisy seemed a familiar character so I bought it. Good thing, too! Loved the story and the vivid characters. I got fooled with a twist or two and the red herrings were well done. Even better was finding that the series is done by Bernadette Dunne, although this is the first I've heard with her doing the British! Good fun. Enjoyed it so much I'll have to dive into the TBR pile and see if I have more hiding there before I buy.

"Spiffing" good cozy mystery

I love the characters, which are always well developed and interesting enough to engage the listener. The story plot has an unexpected twist or two so the listener can't anticipate the ending. The narration and English accent is believable and easy to listen to.

Spiffing?

A bit heavy on the 1920s slang. a reasonable upper class British mystery. once again the peasant is guilty. for once I'd like to see the aristo hang.

Plot twist

I have to say this story had me going. I felt as shattered as the Daisy when she realized who the killer was.
