Publisher's summary

"Matt, I need a war."

So begins David Baldacci's new book - a thriller unlike any he's written before. "Matt" is Mathew Pender, of Pender Associates - a shadowy organization that specializes in managing seemingly impossible situations for its clients. Sometimes, those services extend to managing - and creating - armed conflict.

When Matt Pender is asked by his client - the largest defense contractor in the world - to manipulate two nations against each other, a shocking and surprising series of events is set in motion that will possibly bring the world to the brink of World War III.

In this epic thriller with a global backdrop, David Baldacci delivers all the twists and turns, compelling characters, and can't-put-it-down pacing that listeners have come to expect from this master storyteller.

Balducci keeps coming up with incredible stories!

Another winner from Balducci! This book kept me clinging to the next chapter. I'd sit in my car until I could find a spot in the story to stop at and pull myself away to go into the store.

fantastic book on all levels... well thought out

well thought-out from beginning to end... Never did I wonder how in the world could that happen... Lots of food for thought in an era of fake news!

I was hooked from the start!

I really love the story! Baldacci's way of story telling is amazing. he has a way of taking you in on a ride, and when it's over, you want more!
With great characters, and an even better plot.
this was the first book by him I've listened to, and it won't be my last.
the narrator, Ron McLarty did a great job with telling the story. great voice, with passion for the characters.
will definitely listen to more books he reads.
thank you!

Timely, terrifying, and terrific

“Perception Management” is an innocuous name for one of the greatest dangers of our time. While this tale has a wonderful but not quite believable Superman, which makes for a good listen as you wonder how he will pull off the next win, the underlying story is serious and all too believable. What kind of heroes will it take to protect our world from lies presented as truth, from the exploitation of prejudice and suspicion? Will we be ruled by the emotional reactions of the masses to the latest social media manipulation? Does TRUTH have a chance? If these are topics that interest you, I think you’ll find this story interesting.

Not his best, but still very entertaining

Really enjoyed this book, but compared to Baldacci's earlier novels, this is simply not as good.

Amazing

David Baldacci is probably my favorite author. Ron McLarty is one of the best audiobook narrators I have ever heard and this is far from the first time I have heard the two working together.

But the reason that I found this book amazing is because it involves, a Billionaire, Russia and fake news. An easy enough story to tie together if the book were written six months ago but this came out in 2008. So either David Baldacci is a time traveler or things that we only think of as a problem now have actually been issues for much longer. As cool as the thought of a time traveling David Baldacci might be, I'm going to go ahead and guess it is the latter.

One Baldacci trademark is

that whatever conflicts his heroes seem to find themselves in they are almost always personal in some way. So if you're reading a Baldacci novel and his protagonist has a family member or love interest, it might not be wise to become attached to that character.
I actually think that might be one of the reasons this series is so short. You essentially have a character with no family and no past and in more recent years Baldacci's series have focused on events from his character's back stories.

I had a lot of fun listening to this book. Although, if you haven't read or listened to anything of David Baldacci's previously I'm not sure that this is where I would start. I'm currently listening to the second book in the series and even though it isn't my favorite Baldacci series (Will Robie) it does have its charm. I was still amazed though because as I said earlier this managed to feel very current even though it was written a decade ago.
