Publisher's summary

"Matt, I need a war."

So begins David Baldacci's new book - a thriller unlike any he's written before. "Matt" is Mathew Pender, of Pender Associates - a shadowy organization that specializes in managing seemingly impossible situations for its clients. Sometimes, those services extend to managing - and creating - armed conflict.

When Matt Pender is asked by his client - the largest defense contractor in the world - to manipulate two nations against each other, a shocking and surprising series of events is set in motion that will possibly bring the world to the brink of World War III.

In this epic thriller with a global backdrop, David Baldacci delivers all the twists and turns, compelling characters, and can't-put-it-down pacing that listeners have come to expect from this master storyteller.

Slow start and picks up speed

The first 5 or 6 chapters were a little slow for me. I kept with it and ended up enjoying the story.

Started a bit slow, but great story

I like David Baldacci books as a general rule. After reading reviews for The Whole Truth and then listening to it, I can understand why some reviews were critical about a perceived lack of character development. The characters take longer to get to know and understand in The While Truth than other Baldacci books, but it is there and totally worth waiting for.

The story itself also take some time to unfold, but it is very realistic and I found myself listening every chance I had.

One minor quibble with the narration- there were many times that the ‘voice’ of a character changed mid-sentence/mid-monologue to another character, making me second guess who was supposed to be talking. That was annoying, but not a serious problem.

Overall I recommend the book.

Story Grew on Me

This is the first on the series and it took a little time to establish characters…but established they were. A strong but flawed main character surrounded by an interesting ensemble cast. I found it well paced and entertaining. Narration was good as always. Overall, a good listen…

Good Read / Listen

What did you love best about The Whole Truth?

The narrator was really quite good - created believable and distinctive voices for each of the plot's characters

Any additional comments?

I didn't think this was one of Baldacci's best books, but it was quite entertaining nevertheless. The plot was a little far out there as far as believability is concerned (I hope...), so it didn't really grab ahold of me like some of his other novels have.
