In Florence, two sisters, Isabella and Caterina Cammaccio, find themselves surrounded by terror and death. Determined to take on not only the Nazis but also the newly resurgent Fascists, bands of Partisans rise up. He agrees only as a favour to the Mayor, and because the victim was one of the few surviving Partisans. Pallioti finds himself pulled backwards in time, then racing against it, working to uncover a crime lost in the twilight of the war.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Villa Triste to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print version but have thoroughly enjoyed the journey of this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Villa Triste?

Discovering a completely different angle to WW2 from an Italian perspective I have never really understood the way things were for the Italian people. Think this should be on the reading list for history

Have you listened to any of Julia Barrie’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I may well have but can not recall title at this point. Her voice and inflection tells the story well. I really enjoyed the pace of this. I noted someone reviewed it as slow and an awful Italian accent did not agree it is only really places and people names when it is apparent as an accent and not out of place for me. (No I am not Italian)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The whole book moves in degrees some high some low. The first ambulance journey and the unfolding of the passage of time with the red book are very moving. The ending twist also surprised me.

    Any additional comments?

Please give this book a read very refreshing to find a different angle. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. And with the Audible return promise you really have nothing to lose but huge insight to gain

    "history and mystery"

Great listen, takes you back to WW 2 and takes you on a journey through an Italians eyes. Never thought about the war this way, surposed I assumed (wrongly) that the Italians wouldn't mind the Germans being there because they had been on the same side. Really good story of how what happened 60 year's ago came home to roost today.

    "A wonderful, wonderful read..."

It's hard to exaggerate how good this book is - I haven't enjoyed a novel so much in ages. Excellent characterisation, good plot, twists and turns that keep you guessing. I fell in love with the main protagonists, too. I'll definitely read more from this author!

    "Most disappointing"

I bought this listen because it was set in Italy where I spend quite a bit of time and also because it was 23 hours long. Good value hopefully.

Well I am 2 hours into it and I know why it's 23 hours long. It's because the narration is so laboured and disjointed. Every sentence has 2 or 3 pauses. Also there is absolutely no Italian feel to the way the story is told and I just can't listen to any more mispronunciation of basic Italian words and names. This is the first time I've abandoned an audiobook part way through.

    "Good but too long"

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It's core story takes place in Italy between 1943 and 1945 (I confess I knew next to nothing about the struggle of the Partisans against the Germans and resurgent Italian Fascists at this time). The danger and confusion of this time leads to modern day murders and mysteries that are slowly resolved as the story unfolds. The book is well written, interesting from an historical perspective and evocative of Italy, particularly Florence.

The only criticism I have is that the book is too long. I think that some judicious editing would have tightened and improved the narrative. I also wasn't keen on the narrator's style which was too staccato for my taste. Despite these reservations, however, I would recommend this book.
