Publisher's summary

Even those who make bodies disappear for a living need a vacation.

To Quinn and Orlando, the offer of a private villa on a quiet island beach sounds like heaven, and they jump at the chance for some family time with their six-month-old daughter and Orlando's teenage son.

At first it seems as though their holiday will be even better than they'd hoped. The water is warm, the house is beautiful, and the view is spectacular. But when revenge is in the air, things have a way of going sideways.

Another great Thriller in this amazing series

Would you listen to The Unleashed again? Why?

Yes, great narrative experience

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Scott Brick performs all characters with the same talent and I enjoyed them all

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes

Any additional comments?

The Unleashed is the 10th book in the Jonathan Quinn series by Best-selling and Award Winning Thriller writer Brett Battles. I got my hands on the Audible version just yesterday afternoon, listened to it late into the wee hours of the morning and picked it right up again when I woke up. While drinking my coffee I found myself hurrying just to get back to the audiobook because it was nearly impossible to hit the pause button on my iPhone. So, I guess that you can imagine how good the story is and what a great job Scott Brick has done with the narration.

As a little background for those not familiar with this series, Jonathan Quinn is a Cleaner. His team is called to clean up the mess after a wet job is over. They make the bodies and all evidence disappear forever. I highly recommend the entire Jonathan Quinn series of thrillers as it is amazing, unputdownable and it has never disappointed in any way.

The story opens with a prison break where we make our acquaintance with one of the main bad guys of this book and after that we follow the Quinn family as they arrive on an island in Thailand for a well deserved vacation. On the other side of the World, in Spain, Quinn’s partner and friend, Nate is on a surveillance job and thinking that it was an easy assignment he brought his girlfriend, Quinn’s sister, to spend some time together.

Everything is nice and dandy on all sides, the bad guy is punishing those responsible for his imprisonment. Quinn, Orlando and their kids enjoy the privacy of the island and Nate and Quinn’s sister are having fun in Barcelona, but things start to go wrong for everyone as the job in Spain gets complicated and two members from the Quinn family go missing. From now on, the action moves blazingly fast from Thailand to Europe and back to some other Asian countries as the search for their loved once intensifies.

Brett Battles is one of my favorite authors, I listened to all his books and I’m amazed every time when I realize that he is getting better and better with every Thriller released. From The Cleaner to The Project Eden Series to his time traveling adventures Rewinder, Brett‘s storytelling is consistent. It entertains, thrills and It grabs you by the neck and never lets go. The Unleashed delivers on all fronts, its very fast, the story is well written and filled with vivid and lifelike characters and the end of the book will probably make dedicated Quinn fans, like myself, want to cry… I’ll not say anything else… Let’s move on to the narration.

The amazing and award-winning actor Scott Brick returns once more to give life to Quinn, Nate, Orlando and to all other characters involved in this book. He uses his skills as a narrator entertaining and delighting the listener with a huge range of voices and exotic accents. Scott‘s performance is perfect and I could tell that he loves this series as much as I do.

If you are an audiobook listener you know who Scott Brick is and The Unleashed is another example for why he just won two Audie Awards last week. Tomorrow I’ll start City of Mirror‘s by Justin Cronin, also performed by Scott so you’ll probably ”hear” me again talking and praising his talent very soon.

If you are a Thriller fan, a Quinn fan or a Brett Battles fan, you have to read The Unleashed and if you like audiobooks go with this version because Scott’s narration is amazing!

Super book - SPECTACULAR CLIFFHANGER!!!!

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

Not a darn thing, Scott Brick's narration is exactly what I expected it to be - outstanding.

Do you have any additional comments?

Yes this is a book I would listen to again. WHY? Because books this good deserve a second listen! When I enjoy a book as much as I did this one I often will listen again and will inevitably hear parts missed the first time around.
I won't restate the plot as I think Audible listener Wayne has done a very eloquent job already.
My own feelings about this book are that this is an exciting thriller. I listen to mystery/thrillers almost exclusively and I can't remember when the last time was that my pulse was actually racing but this one sure did it! The story combined with Scott Brick's narration is as always excellent.
I don't want to spoil this for anyone but... The las chapter through me for a loop. I never saw it coming and had to go back and listen to it again because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. And what a Cliffhanger this ended with. GRRRRRR, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!
Now, if that doesn't make you want to get this book, I don't know what would.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Does NOT disappoint!

The Unleashed is Book 10 of the offbeat Jonathan Quinn espionage thriller series by Brett Battles. I read the Kindle version when it was released 9 weeks ago. The Audible version was released today. My first observation is that this superb book is better with Scott Brick narrating than with me reading it using the Kindle app. All books in the series are in my Audible library and all, beginning with The Cleaner, are superb thrillers.

The novel is about a Quinn family vacation on an exotic island in Thailand. Quinn, Orlando, their 6 month old daughter, and Orlando's 13 year old son are there. So is Ding. Quinn's old partner Nate is in Europe with Quinn's sister (Nate's girlfriend). When the two children are kidnapped and taken away in a plane, they all converge to search for the children.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Worst Quinn novel

Would you try another book from Brett Battles and/or Scott Brick?

I've heard all of the Quinn series, and I love Scott Brick, but this was a really slow moving story with no plot. I'm probably done with Brett Battles, this story had no point.

Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?

Of course.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I managed to finish it. But I regret it.

NEVER GET ENOUGH!!!!

This book is so loaded with twists and turns! I couldn't stop listening! In many, many ways, I think Jonathan Quinn is superior to all Jack Reacher books (and I've listened to almost all of them). And Scott Brick? WOW! WOW! WOW!!!! I never grow tired of his voice. Battles and Brick are the best dynamic duo ever IMO! I do hope another Quinn episode is on the near horizon! Can't wait! SO WORTH THE CREDIT!

A point off for cliffhanger

What you expect from Battles. Action, escape, good pacing. But cliffhangers are enough to put me off a series.

Disappointing

It's incredibly hard for me to explain why I disliked this novel without going into spoilers. What I will say is that I expected much more from this installment in the series and it is likely to be the last one I'll read.

The typically tight plotting seen in previous Quinn novels is missing here. The characters make decisions that are not in line with the development seen in previous novels. Quite a few parts feel like amateur hour and while some of that can be forgiven given the emotional investment of the characters, there are several decisions made and actions taken that took me beyond my suspension of disbelief.

****SEMI-SPOILER****
That said, it was really the ending put the final nail in the coffin, both for me and one of the characters. You know it's bad when a rather important character dies and your emotional reaction is to roll your eyes, not dab at them.

I DON'T BELIEVE -AT ALL- THE 5 STAR RATINGS

I see Audible has been overrun with fake reviews as Amazon has. This book was sooooo weak I cannot see how anyone can give it a valid across-the-board 5 star rating. Scott Brick was brilliant as always and was the only reason I listened from start to finish.

If you want true quality, listen to the Mitch Rapp series, or the Dewey Andreas series, or the Gray Man series, or even the Delta Force novels by Dalton Fury. Listen to those books and then tell me how this book got 5 stars overall and for the story. I understand the 5 stars for narration, though.

I'm not asking for a refund because I listened to the whole thing but it wasn't worth a credit.
