The Unfinished Clue | [Georgette Heyer]

The Unfinished Clue

The Unfinished Clue is a clever and humorous murder mystery set at a British country estate in the 1930s. There, each of the invited guests, along with the victim's wife and the estate's staff members (the butler, the maids, the gardener), had good reason to hate the arrogant and abrasive victim. Sir Arthur Billington-Smith had successfully alienated each and every one of them.

Publisher's Summary

The Unfinished Clue is a clever and humorous murder mystery set at a British country estate in the 1930s. There, each of the invited guests, along with the victim's wife and the estate's staff members (the butler, the maids, the gardener), had good reason to hate the arrogant and abrasive victim. Sir Arthur Billington-Smith had successfully alienated each and every one of them. In fact, he's simply bloody unbearable, but soon he's simply bloody, and thoroughly dead...done in by a decorative Chinese dagger to the back, the dagger Sir Arthur himself used as a letter opener. And found near his lifeless hand is a handwritten note: the unfinished clue of the title.

When Inspector Harding of Scotland Yard is called in to solve the case, he's soon convinced that nearly everyone could be guilty. But who is, in fact? Heyer ingeniously presents the clues and motivations, and keeps you guessing until the enjoyable end.

"There are more Georgette Heyer mysteries!!"
Would you listen to The Unfinished Clue again? Why?

The Unfinished Clue is another well-written book by Georgette Heyer and to listen again (and again) is an easy and comfortable thing to do...

Have you listened to any of Clifford Norgate’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Clifford Norgate is an excellent reader and differentiates the charactors very well. He is also an excellent reader of other Georgette Heyer mysteries: Envious Casca, They Found Him Dead, Duplicate Death.....all of which are not currently availalbe on Audible (but would be much appreciated).

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't much care for movies made from books.

    Any additional comments?

I hope Audible will include some of the other Georgette Heyer mysteries. All of her books have interesting charactors, excellent dialogue and fun plots.

Love to read. Mysteries, history, romance, biography, current events, science, classic fiction. No vampires. No zombies. No self-help. Find me on GoodReads and BookLikes.

    "Agatha Wannabe?"

I started reading Georgette Heyer when I was in high school. That was a long time ago. I have read most of her historical fiction and Regency novels, some of them multiple, multiple times but until recently I have never read a single one of her mystery stories. And then I read the only two on Audible one right after the other.

I think my first reaction was that she was trying to imitate Agatha Christie, but then again, what choices did she have for writing mystery stories in the 1930s? At least she stuck to what she knew--the British gentry and eccentric characters.

Bottom-line: Not her best work but certainly not her worst. If you want a 'light' mystery free of blood and guts, this will do.

    "EXCELLENT LISTEN!!"

Good performance coupled with a light-hearted, humorous detective story. It reminded me of the film Gosford Park directed by Robert Altman. I like Heyer's romances but was worried her talent would not translate to her mysteries. I was wrong. This was a delightfully entertaining listen.

    "What Fun!"

I thought Georgette Heyer only wrote sappy romance novels that I wouldn't be caught dead reading. This light-hearted mystery is wry and charming and totally engaging. The narrator is excellent.

"A Masterful Mystery and a Masterful Performance"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Unfinished Clue to be better than the print version?

The performance showed the characters off to best advantage.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lola, the Mexican dancer was a hoot! Quirky characters abounded.

    Any additional comments?

The audible version made the book come alive for me and I would certainly recommend it. The reader was absolutely superb and a reader that I want to seek out in the future. Ms. Heyer was a master author and I hope many more of her mysteries become available. I might even be tempted to listen to one of her romances just to enjoy more of her work.

Tell us about yourself! Attorney/Rancher - eclectic taste in books in both fiction and non-fiction. Preference for British authors in mysteries, love well written dialogue and hate historical fiction.

    "Wonderful dialogue."
What made the experience of listening to The Unfinished Clue the most enjoyable?

    Dialogue and Characters.

    Any additional comments?

I read for characters, dialogue and plot. If you don't like Dickens, you won't like Heyer.
It is so rare to read good dialogue, that to read or hear Heyer, in whatever genre, is a pleasure to both the mind and the senses. On the other hand, if you need plot driven stories, with guns, vehicle crashes or good looking vampires, she is not the author for you.

    "Classic Murder Mystery"

If you are a fan of cozy British murder mysteries, then this is a book for you. Interesting characters, an intricate plot and I wasn't able to guess the murderer.

I'm a mom. I have drama in my life. I don't want books with the F-bomb, nor graphic violence. I read for fun and to bring my family together. I read for reducing stress levels. We have never had a television in our home and our children are now mid twenties to 19. We listen together and look for belly-wrenching laughter. So what is it like to live without a TV? Awesomely educational and inspirational. Each new book is a marvel.

    "This was a fun mystery"
If you could sum up The Unfinished Clue in three words, what would they be?

No foul mouth, no graphic adult content, and just plain good writing. I enjoy mysteries but sometimes I wonder if the book should really be in the smut section. This book was fabulously written, a suspenseful mystery and an unexpected ending. I enjoyed it and have listened twice.

Have you listened to any of Clifford Norgate’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to this narrator before but I will in the future. His reading was fantastic and perfect for each character. I loved it!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Forgo the movies and read a book.

    Any additional comments?

Listen to the sample. I think the narration and story will capture anyone willing to give it a listen. I have listened twice, that speaks volumes!

    "Typical Victorian who-dunnit"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This a good, solid mystery in the Victorian England, houseful of suspects who-dunnit genre.
The narrator is good at voicing the different characters and so, although the story often plods along, he keeps things interesting. It is not a modern thriller with anything too outlandish; there are no guns, car chases, international spies...this is just a solid murder mystery with strongly written characters. I must admit that I found myself nodding off at times during this listen - but it was very good.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Good ending - unexpected.

"One of Heyer's best mysteries! More please!!!"

This is a great cozy mystery in the country house setting, but with a few wonderful surprises. Georgette Heyer wrote twelve mysteries in her lifetime, and most of them were early in her career. The puzzle is good, but the characters are wonderful, especially the Mexican fiancée (who would be at home in an Erte creation) and her press agent. The reader is pretty good. He reads the book as if he were actually paying attention, which is not true of all audio book readers.

The person who said that this is a Victorian mystery is off by several decades. This book is set in the time when it was written. It was originally published in 1934. Heyer wrote twelve mysteries, most of them in the thirties, all of them have been recorded by British publishers. Unfortunately, Audible only has two of them - some of the best. I wish that Audible would acquire the others, especially "No Wind Of Blame". If you enjoy Heyer's dialog, you will adore that one even more than "Unfinished Clue".
