Publisher's summary

In this modern-day Hunt for Red October, an armed nuclear submarine is taken over and must be hunted down before its weapons are launched.

The USS Kentucky - a Trident ballistic missile submarine carrying a full complement of 192 nuclear warheads - sets out on a routine cruise. Not long after it reaches the open sea, however, the Kentucky receives a launch order. After receiving that launch order, it is cut off from all counter orders and disappears into the Pacific while it makes the eight-day transit to the launch site. What the Kentucky's crew doesn't know is that those launch orders didn't come from the US government.

Rogue elements within the Mossad have learned that Iran has developed its first nuclear weapon and, in ten days, will detonate it - and the target is Israel. The suspected weapon complex is too far underground for conventional weapons to harm it, and the only choice is a preemptive nuclear strike. With limited time, this rogue group initiates a long-planned operation called the Trident Deception: They'll transmit false orders and use a US nuclear submarine to launch the attack.

With only eight days before the Kentucky is in launch range and with the submarine cut off from any outside communication, one senior officer, the father of one of the officers aboard the submarine, must assemble and lead a team of attack submarines to find, intercept, and neutralize the Kentucky before it can unknowingly unleash a devastating nuclear attack.

Trident Success

Outstanding in every respect. Scary as it could easily have happened…and may have! Rick Campbell has gained a new customer.

Couldn't Finish

One nuclear weapons submarine is going to start World War III. We know exactly where our nuclear sub is and can even get close enough to talk by underwater phone. Here's just a thought drop a nuclear weapon on top of them in the middle of the ocean. Successful weapon test and problem solved. Just in case your squeamish we plan to torpedo and kill them anyway. Idiotic so I gave up.

Boring and predictable

This book promised to be interesting. It had an unique premise of an unwitting nuclear attack by the US on Iran, all being orchestrated by a 3rd power who did not want to be known as the real attacker. True, some of the politics seemed a bit far fetched and some of the characters might have had to be pretty ignorant to not think that the US would eventually figure it out and retaliate, but it is only a novel so some leeway is expected. However the reality of the book was just not up to the premise.

The actions of the main characters were entirely too predictable, the story line ended up being just too simple minded, some of what were supposed to be moments of suspense were just not so since it was obvious the book was far from complete, and relatively simple solutions to the problem were just ignored. I don't want to drop any spoilers, but anyone good with morse code could have sent a message to the sub in question just by banging on the hull of a ship with a wrench.

I never made it past the first half of the book, and it was tough getting that far. The narration was adequate, even if barely so, but the story was just too full of bad decisions to make it even a little plausible.

Over good but some parts were really poor

Over all the book was good. Just parts were really poor. Has a tedency to drag some parts of the story out way too long and with excessive drama that really degrades the overall book.

Great, engrossing.

A fantastic story! Thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s on par with Clancy.

Ok, the damn word requirement is really pissing me off.

Story Based On A Well Known Antisemitic Trope

The plot of this novel involves an American Jew whose backstory includes education at a Jewish day school. The plot turns on the well known antisemitic trope that an observant Jew will have greater allegiance to Israel than to the US, Amazon/Audible shouldn’t be selling it.

plot holes, overly simplistic sub stuff ok.

If this incident happened in real life the players would do things so differently it’s annoying. For example the administration has strong evidence the Mossad is behind the plot but the story has the characters do nothing on this thread. I suspect there were important and necessary characters and story elements that were edited out. The President basically has 1 advisor on this unprecedented crisis who is supposedly the Jack Ryan of the story but makes dumb, annoying decisions at about every turn. CIA/NSA/FBI would be central to the story of this crisis but apparently don’t exist in this story. The main characters do so many things stupidly and differently given the information they have that it’s annoying. The sub stuff is ok and probably accurate but lacks thrill of a good Clancy tale...but if you just want to read some cool battle scenes there some of that. Probably better story editing would help. The story arc and plot line is thin and repetitive.
