Publisher's summary

Husband-and-wife team Sam and Remi Fargo are intrigued when an archaeologist friend requests their help excavating a top secret historical site. What they find will set them on a hunt for a prize greater than they could ever imagine. The clues point to the hidden tomb of Attila the Hun, the High King who was reportedly buried with a vast fortune of gold and jewels and plunder....a bounty that has never been found. As they follow the trail through Hungary, Italy, France, Russia, and Kazakhstan - a trail that they discover leads them not to one tomb, but five - the Fargos will find themselves pitted against a thieving group of amateur treasure hunters, a cunning Russian businessman, and a ruthless Hungarian who claims direct descent from Attila himself...and will stop at nothing to claim the tombs' riches as his own.

Great Entertaining Read

Clive Cussler does it again. From the first page of the book, the reader’s attention is grabbed and kept throughout the book. Although unbelievable, Clive Cussler entertains the reader with an action packed adventure of Sam and Remi Fargo, taking them from one continent to another as they try to find the treasures of Attila the Hun. I found this book to be an entertaining read that kept my attention throughout all 384 pages. I would definitely recommend it.

A bad novel is a bad novel even when written by...

....Clive Cussler. My 2 star rating is being very generous with this contrived novel. Sam and Remi Fargo take on the facts and legends around Attila the Hun who built his empire in central Europe during the 5th century CE. The actual adventures of the Fargo's is good at times and incredible (not credible) at others. I still have 3 books to listen to in this series. I'd much prefer to be listening to Cussler's excellent Isaac Bell series.

Predictable But Enjoyable

What did you love best about The Tombs?

Classic Cussler action tale. Doesn't require a lot from the listener, and is fairly predictable. It's perfect to fill in between heavier fare. Relaxing and enjoyable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Zoltan; he was a welcome addition to the usual cast of characters. A well trained, loyal dog is a delight in books as well as life.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Scott Brick's popularity mystifies me. He can't do accents at all, doesn't voice characters particularly well so the listener can differentiate among them, and he still doesn't moderate his voice well for different situations. He's obviously trying to correct these deficiencies (which I and other reviewers have noted in the past) and has succeeded in not making each line sound like a question. He's just OK for a Cussler potboiler, but definitely not for better writing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's enjoyable, but it wasn't so captivating that I couldn't hit the stop button.

I love Clive Cussler. He has long been one of my favorite authros, and he does not disappoint in this book. Sam and Remi are at the top of their game.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The introduction of the dog.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first Scott Brick narrated book. He did a wonderful job

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

High stakes thrills! Wonderful book.

Best Fargo book yet!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Very entertaining, no dragging parts. Characters were wonderfully amusing, sinister and believable.

What other book might you compare The Tombs to and why?

We've listened to a couple of other Fargo books. This one was more developed and portrayed the Fargos as being tougher and more capable

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Scott Brick. I pick books just because he has read them. My husband is German and is terribly impressed with all of his accents. He is the perfect reader!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. We have a 10 hour commute every weekend and listen to audio books.

Starts slow and never really picks up

Would you listen to The Tombs again? Why?

No there are to many other books I haven't read or listened to yet.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

SPOILER ALERT: The most interesting aspect was that they were hunting for the tomb of Atilla the Hun and after finding treasure cashes and clues all over Europe and Asia he winds up being buried in the Roman catacombs behind a false wall.

The least interesting aspect was that the bad guys in the book are about as smart and scary as 1st graders and their henchmen are even worse, and then the Fargos are like Einstein in comparison. Then they wait till the very end for the Fargos and the bad guys to have a shoot out .... IN CALIFORNIA AFTER THEY FOUND THE TREASURE AND PUT IT IN MUSEUMS. Just when i thought it was over there were four more chapters that were completely pointless.

What aspect of Scott Brick’s performance would you have changed?

He needs to put a little more enthusiasm into the characters the way he read it made it seem like the characters were bored all the time

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely not as it was it took me most of a month to get through it.

Any additional comments?

This is the second Fargo Adventure I've listened to and the other one wasn't any better. Its kind of a mix between romance, adventure and mystery that failed miserably, and should be covered in bacon and thrown into a kennel full of trained German Sheppard attack dogs.

The Fargos are at it again.

Would you listen to The Tombs again? Why?

Yes, the story is interesting in a historical and adventure sense. The characters are as with most of Cussler's characters are well defined and developed in a way that pulls you into the story even if you are not normally an adventure book series person.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Tombs?

The fighting scene in which the Fargos are using cannon balls to fight off snipers. The way the Fargos ecape the main bad guys home on horseback after using flour to cause a flash over explosion to set the kitchen on fire.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, in fact while at working doing the stocking at night my co-workers would give me funny looks because of my random outburst of laughter related to the story. I loved having the story going thru headphones as I worked through the long hours in the very early morning

Huge Letdown

What disappointed you about The Tombs?

Quality of writing and plot flow was not even in the same league as all of the other Fargo adventures. I love and have listened to every single Fargo book as they are released, and I didn't even finish listening to this one. The plot flow makes sense, but contains no sensory details or attempts to really make you feel like you are there, which I think has been present in all of the previous Fargo books.

Would you ever listen to anything by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry again?

Yes, of course. Lifelong Cussler fan, and love every other book he has written / co written except this one.

What character would you cut from The Tombs?

I already 'know' Sam and Remy, but the character development of all the new characters was slipshod.

Any additional comments?

Very disappointed with writing quality in general. Scott Brick, as always, is one of the best narrators on Audible.
