Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In a plush Virginia office, a rich, angry old man is furiously rewriting his will. With his death just hours away, Troy Phelan wants to send a message to his children, his ex-wives, and his minions—a message that will touch off a vicious legal battle and transform dozens of lives.

Nate O'Riley is a high-octane Washington litigator who's lived too hard, too fast, for too long. His second marriage in a shambles, and he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions, and resilient sense of humor. Returning to the real world is always difficult, but this time it's going to be murder.

Rachel Lane is a young woman who chose to give her life to God, who walked away from the modern world with all its strivings and trappings and encumbrances, and went to live and work with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles of Brazil.

In a story that mixes legal suspense with a remarkable adventure, their lives are forever altered by the startling secret of The Testament.

Critic reviews

"Grisham's smart use of the suspense novel to explore questions of being and faith puts him squarely in the footsteps of Dickens and Graham Greene." (Publishers Weekly)

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

A must listen book

I have read the The Testament many years before, to listen to it on audible was quite the experience. Without picture the listener can visual every chapter of this novel. If you have not read or listen to The Testament, you have to get a copy.

very good, will keep you listening

the narrator was difficult to get used to at first, using emphasis for character speech in non character speech. great story up to the end, my favorite Grisham so far.

Amazing!

The narrator is great! This book kept me on the edge of my seat at all times. I was listening in the shower, driving, cooking, you name it. I took my headphones places so that if I ever had to wait, I could get a few more pages in. Highly recommend!

Very engaging and insightful!

The family dynamics were incredibly engaging, insightful and entertaining. Traveling to South America and following the journey described on Google earth gave even more understanding of the story being told.

Another Grisham classic

Any additional comments?

I generally enjoy John Grisham's novels - they have imaginative plots and include rich descriptions of the characters and their feelings. This book was amongst his best - the pictures that he weaves of the Amazon are incredible; likewise, the players come alive in the narrative.

Terrific narration

This Grisham book didn’t seem to be as fast paced as some of the others.

Great Book!

A well written and interesting book. A lesson on the love of money and how dangerous and destructive it can be. All the people in the book are very relatable and real. The heros and villains are the same people who you will meet walking down the street of any major city.

Very entertaining

Brilliantly written! Very entertaining. Minimal cursing (much appreciated). A bit long for my taste but overall I enjoyed this story very much.
