Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In a plush Virginia office, a rich, angry old man is furiously rewriting his will. With his death just hours away, Troy Phelan wants to send a message to his children, his ex-wives, and his minions—a message that will touch off a vicious legal battle and transform dozens of lives.

Nate O'Riley is a high-octane Washington litigator who's lived too hard, too fast, for too long. His second marriage in a shambles, and he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions, and resilient sense of humor. Returning to the real world is always difficult, but this time it's going to be murder.

Rachel Lane is a young woman who chose to give her life to God, who walked away from the modern world with all its strivings and trappings and encumbrances, and went to live and work with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles of Brazil.

In a story that mixes legal suspense with a remarkable adventure, their lives are forever altered by the startling secret of The Testament.

Critic reviews

"Grisham's smart use of the suspense novel to explore questions of being and faith puts him squarely in the footsteps of Dickens and Graham Greene." (Publishers Weekly)

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Good story with an over-dramatic narrator

I like the book in general but I resent the over-dramatic narration, where all last vowels in a sentence are prolonged, even in the most banal sentences, like 'he ate jaaaaam'. Plus the performer obviously doesn't distinguish between Spanish an Portuguese accents.

Great story, goes quick. Narrator was annoying at first, but becomes bearable.

This was my first John Grisham book, after hearing this one I will definitely be checking out some others in his collection.

Not suspenseful, but interesting story - 3 1/2 *'s

This novel was not what I expected at all, as it wasn't particularly tense or suspenseful. I did enjoy the story, and it was interesting to learn about a remote area of Brazil. Other than the main character, a likeable alcoholic lawyer who is trying to stay sober, there isn't much character development. Religion plays a big role in influencing the main character, and the novel seems to have a 'mission' to promote Chistianity. Women have only small roles in the book, and the only woman who wasn't portrayed as unlikeable, was portrayed as a perfect Christian saint - a Mother Teresa. The narrator was okay, but it frequently seemed like his tone was that of someone telling a secret instead of just reading a story. All in all, I'd say it was a bit predictable, but a pleasant listen.
