Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In a plush Virginia office, a rich, angry old man is furiously rewriting his will. With his death just hours away, Troy Phelan wants to send a message to his children, his ex-wives, and his minions—a message that will touch off a vicious legal battle and transform dozens of lives.

Nate O'Riley is a high-octane Washington litigator who's lived too hard, too fast, for too long. His second marriage in a shambles, and he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions, and resilient sense of humor. Returning to the real world is always difficult, but this time it's going to be murder.

Rachel Lane is a young woman who chose to give her life to God, who walked away from the modern world with all its strivings and trappings and encumbrances, and went to live and work with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles of Brazil.

In a story that mixes legal suspense with a remarkable adventure, their lives are forever altered by the startling secret of The Testament.

Critic reviews

"Grisham's smart use of the suspense novel to explore questions of being and faith puts him squarely in the footsteps of Dickens and Graham Greene." (Publishers Weekly)

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

One of Grisham's best

I truly feel as if this is one of Grisham's best novels. Most of his books rely so much on the law, and the courtroom proceedings to carry them (and I do not mind that, by the way), but this story held it's own strictly on it's own merits. The interaction between the characters, and the deep introspection and evolution of the protagonist is so masterfully portrayed. I simply could not stop listening. Frank Muller is a wonderful narrator, especially when he can sink his teeth into such great material.

I really enjoyed it

I am not a very well read person, so I do not really feel qualified to rate somebody with the authority that John Grisham has. That said just as a normal guy driving down the road, I really was inspired and entertained as I listened to the story and feel like it was a really good value for me

Narrator got under my skin

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The story is a good one but the narrator got under my skin. Even sentence had a dramatic breathy ending. It's a good style for some portions of the book, but not for EVERY sentence. Drove me a bit nuts.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is good

The Best Grisham Book Yet!

Would you listen to The Testament again? Why?

This is the first Grisham book that has ever made me cry. I like stories that provoke me to be a better person, and this one did that without being preachy. I also appreciate having characters who are spiritual/Bible believing/missionaries that are real people, not caricatures.

What did you like best about this story?

Rachel was the best part of the story--the selfless missionary who wants nothing to do with a fortune being handed to her by a father she never knew. Her influence on the main character of the story, Nate, is profound but believable.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

Muller's characterizations for each speakers, especially Frank Phelan's, were excellent!

One of Grisham's Best

I loved this audible book. At first I wasn't sure about Frank Muller's narration - his breathy sort of endings of sentences, but I grew to like his narration. Loved learning about this part of the world - Brazil, and the plot was a really good one - I really had no idea about where it was going and what was going to happen. Hadn't read a Grisham novel in awhile and I'm glad I chose this one.
