Publisher's summary

Fredrik Gustavsson never considered the possibility of love, or that anyone could ever understand or accept his dark and bloody lifestyle - until he met Seraphina, a woman as vicious and blood-thirsty as Fredrik himself. They spent two short but unforgettable years together, full of lust and killing and the darkest kind of love that two people can share. And then Seraphina was gone. It's been six years since Fredrik's lover and sadistic partner in crime turned his world upside-down. Seraphina went into hiding and has eluded him ever since. Now, he's getting closer to finding her, and an innocent woman named Cassia is the key to drawing Seraphina from the shadows. But Cassia - after sustaining injuries from a fire that Seraphina ignited - suffers from amnesia and can't give Fredrik the information he desperately seeks. Having no other choice, Fredrik has been keeping Cassia locked in his basement as he not only tries to get her to recall her past - because she and Seraphina share it - but also to protect her from Seraphina, who clearly wants her dead. But Cassia is a light in the darkness that Fredrik never believed existed. After a year subjected to her kindness and compassion, he finds himself struggling with his love for Seraphina, and his growing feelings for Cassia - because he knows that to love one, the other must die. Will light win out over darkness, or will something more powerful than either further destroy an already tortured soul?

★★★★½ twisty stars, even better than the sequel!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Unequivocally yes! I would totally recommend this audiobook because the narrators were excellent and because the story itself was such a fascinating character study.

What did you like best about this story?

In addition to discovering how Victor's new covert organization was evolving, we also learned some really crazy things about Fredrik, Seraphina and Cassia and their intertwined relationship. I didn't anticipate the biggest twist although others might have or may. I love when a novel's plot direction surprises me without turning me off.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Male narrator Luke Daniels was very inventive with his different character voices, and he didn't sound ridiculous doing the female characters. The latter is hard to pull off for any narrator doing the opposite gender's voice, so kudos to both Luke and female narrator Andi Arndt. They both just nailed the narration beautifully! I loved that I was never annoyed when they alternated narrating a POV.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Surprisingly, the ending worked for me. I thought I'd be more upset with it, but Author JA Redmerski laid the groundwork for that outcome so flawlessly that I truly have no complaints.

Any additional comments?

Narrator Luke Daniels did have a weird character dialog voice for Fredrik when he picked up the random chick in the bar. It was his only weak scene in my opinion. I'm excited to see that Luke will return to continue narrating Fredrik's POV in Seeds of Iniquity (In the Company of Killers #4).

Fredrik is soooooo interesting!

This series just gets better and better! This is the third in the company of killers and it is great! The story of Fredrik and if you have read #1 and #2 you know he is a torturer. It is a mindf#&k from the beginning. I loved it and highly recommend. #4 is coming in October and sounds great! The narrators were good too!

Not for the weak hearted, but WOW!!!

This is a story of love and betrayal and loss. Set in the ring of assassin s for hire, it's hard core all the way. great story, plot and excellent narration. If you are one who doesn't like it sugar coated then this series is for you. Happy listening.

My heart is still racing!

Where does The Swan and the Jackal rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I bought this book believing it was something other than it is, however, I was not disappointed. I would rank this book in my top ten (and my library is extensive).

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Swan and the Jackal?

There isn't just one moment. The entire book is memorable. So memorable that I found myself practically giving my husband a blow by blow of the entire thing.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

I don't know that this is a book that you would pick a favorite character. However, Luke Daniels, Andi Arndi, and Kate Reinders are superb, as always!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were moments when my heart was racing, that I gasped, that I cried, that I nodded along, agreeing with what was going on, and moments that I smiled, big and wide.

Any additional comments?

This book is not for the faint of heart. I originally bought it thinking it would turn out to be some sort of mildly twisted romance. Do not buy this book if that is what you're looking for; buy it because it's an amazing, broken, dark, sick love story thriller suspense that, at times, will make you almost wet your pants. It worth all that and more.

What!?!

This was the first of the In The Company of Killers series book I read. After reading this book The Swan and The Jackal I just had to go buy the rest of the series. The Swan and The Jackal is by far the best book but must be read or heard after the first two books, Killing Sarai and Reviving Izabel. Like in my previous reviews of this series it is not for everyone. There is violence, slave trade, sadistic people, killers, blood and just craziness. If I had not heard this book first I might have never given the series a chance, but I fell in love with Fredrik. He shows all the signs of a serial killer but in some sort of twisted way you end up hoping for a "happy-ending" to his story. Like I said in my previous reviews this is my favorite one out of all the books so far. The stories are well written and though they are fictional you fall into their stories very quickly. The narrators for this particular book are wonderful. Again I warn this story is not for everyone. Enjoy!
