Publisher's summary

Nate Overbay, a former soldier suffering from PTSD and ALS, goes to an 11th-floor bank and climbs out the bathroom window onto the ledge, ready to end it all. But as he’s steeling himself to jump, a crew of gunmen bursts into the bank and begins viciously shooting employees and customers. With nothing to lose, Nate climbs back inside, confronts the robbers, and with his military training, starts taking them out, one by one. The last man standing leaves Nate with a cryptic warning: “He will make you pay in ways you can’t imagine.” Soon enough, Nate learns what this means.

He is kidnapped by Pavlo, a savage Ukrainian mobster and mastermind of the failed heist. Now blocked from getting into the bank vault to retrieve the critical item inside, Pavlo gives Nate a horrifying ultimatum: Either break in and acquire the item or watch Pavlo slowly kill the people Nate loves most - his estranged wife, Janie, and his teenaged daughter, Cielle. Nate lost them both when he came back from Iraq broken and confused. Now he’s got one chance to protect the people he loves, even if it’s the last thing he is able to do.

Thrilling

I loved the fast pace suspense of this novel. The determination of the protagonist to change things was admirable. This was my second book by Gregg Hurwitz and I look forward to reading more. Scott Brick's a great narrator and is one of my favorites.

Great storyline and very well narrated by Scott Bick.

I found myself glued to this book, Gregg Hurwitz is the Master of suspense. If you enjoy this book, do yourself a favour and buy “They’re Watching & You’re Next” you want be disappointed.

Gripping, nail biting and horrifying drama

I have to admit I was shocked by the gruesome images portrayed at times and that was nearly enough to turn me away but, I had to figure out how this young man was going to wade through this mess he found himself trapped in. The fact that this traumatized young man had lost so much and yet somehow was hoping to find its way through and back to the people he loved had me hoping for a miracle. As much as I would have loved a fairy tale ending I must compliment the author for the tenderness and and loving emotion he lets us go through with the characters. I even found myself liking the sh**head boyfriend. It's a roller coaster ride that will have you holding on to your seat and wondering what's going to happen all the way to the end. It is hard to get better than that.

Another marvelous book by Gregg Hurwitz

I absolutely love the Orphan X series, and so based on that, I chose to read this book. I actually started listening to The Tower, but I just couldn’t get into it. I will however give it another shot.

With this book, I was hooked from the very first page. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that it felt ‘long’ at times, but perhaps that was simply because I couldn’t wait to get to the end. As always, Scott Brick’s performance was superb. I highly recommend this book.

Brilliant Premise

Would you listen to The Survivor again? Why?

This is a tightly written thriller. What makes this book even better is that the protagonist has ALS. A reasonable and thoughtful protagonist makes entirely different choices when he knows he is dying. Brilliant!

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

He always delivers.

Loved it!

Great read! From minute one, it keeps you interested. The “survivor” just keeps on surviving.....so many predicaments to get out of. Great all the way to the end. Good narrative, too.

Best Gregg Hurwitz yet.

What made the experience of listening to The Survivor the most enjoyable?

This was one of the most suspenseful books I've listened to yet, from start to finish. Of course Scott Brick does the usual outstanding performance.

Any additional comments?

Highly Recommended

Excellent Story

My first read of this author and will not be my last. So many books contain bits and pieces of other stories we all have read before but Hurwitz really made many of these characters very interesting. The only complaint I had was the daughter of our hero. Did some very stupid preditable things and her emotion state was not a consistent. Found myself saying No way....she didnt do that or say that....
