Publisher's summary

Against all odds we have made it into the last half of the 1990s. The Cold War looks solved, Arabs and Jews are talking, confrontation is on the wane. In this new harmony, one discord - what becomes of unemployed terrorists?

You can bet they aren't going to retire quietly. Shunned by the Soviets, isolated by Middle Eastern realignment, one cadre hits on a scheme to jump-start the war machine. It's brilliant in its simplicity. With a single act they bring the world to nuclear boil. Jack Ryan and Dan Murray sweat to defuse a cataclysmic response.

Even though it brings out all my emotions. This is still one of my favorites in the series.

Best so far

This is the best Clancy novel so far in my opinion for drama & facts. Scott Brick’s Boris & Natasha renderings of Russians is pretty distracting.

NOTHING like the movie

This is my favorite Tom Clancy book, with Red Storm Rising coming in a close second. The book uses a similar scenario as the movie, the book expands on the concept which greatly enhances the experience.

This is a nightmare made real by good writing. The concepts are extremely complicated and show the need for not only an effective intelligence community but also leaders who will listen.

Also, this is not a book that can be anywhere near as compelling in the abridged form. If you're going to listen to it definitely get the unabridged form.

It is not an "easy listen" since Clancy often goes deep into the technical aspects of both the military, atomic weapons, and politics.

a talented story teller

very intense story, realistic. I wish the movie followed the book. I like hot the author sets the reader up for debt of honor

so scary it should be "horror"

My emotions were provoked! I felt genuine anger towards some characters. I also felt the fear that I never experience listening to titles under Horror. So scary that it's plausible there are people who think the way the terrorists do in this book.
Very very entertaining

Much better than the movie

I love the details Tom Clancy brings into the story and how rich the characters are. Great story!

Stunning!

This is an amazing and gripping tale, paralleling real possibilities. Every character is complete, with all the flaws, heroism, and ambiguities of being human. Scott Brick, always an enduring reader and voice actor, doesn’t disappoint. This is definitely worth the read!

He did his homework

More than that; Tom Clancy must have gone to the ends of the Earth to find the subject matter experts on every detail of this book. I have experience as a machinist and an engineer; the way he describes certain events makes me believe he is both due to the accuracy and the broad perspective offered that one wouldn’t have unless it was their trade. This leads me to believe that the other subjects I have no experience with, such as politics and intelligence operations, must be just as correctly re-enacted as my own profession. This was a brilliant book and I’d recommend it to just about anyone.
