Publisher's Summary

An imaginative, tight, edge-of-your-seat supernatural thriller which follows an historical mystery through to its nail-biting contemporary conclusion.

The String Diaries. A jumble of entries, written in different hands, different languages, and different times. They tell of a rumour. A shadow. A killer. The only interest that Oxford Professor Charles Meredith has in the diaries is as a record of Hungarian folklore... until he comes face to face with a myth.

For Hannah Wilde, the diaries are a survival guide that taught her the three rules she lives by: verify everyone, trust no one, and if in any doubt, run. But Hannah knows that if her daughter is ever going to be safe, she will have to stop running and face the terror that has hunted her family for five generations. And nothing in the diaries can prepare her for that.

I really loved this book and its sequel, Written in the Blood. The author has a wonderful imagination and one could almost believe these people are grounded in real Hungarian folklore. These books have a wonderful pace and I could easily read more set in this world. Highly recommended.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    An Abridged version!

Has The String Diaries put you off other books in this genre?

    Not really, just this author

    Any additional comments?

The book started with promise, only the blatant "product placement" began to irritate me. (I only want to know it was a torch - not which make of torch!) Then it was some basic lack in some research. I am sure all the knowledge of Hungarian folklore and the places described were accurate but some research on basic anatomy would have been helpful. Maybe I am nit-picking but things I know about have to be accurate for me, or I turn off! Someone with a bare knowledge of First Aid cannot set up an IV into a vein! You cannot plunge a syringe into a bicep and get back blood! These seemed such incongruous inaccuracies that I began to wonder how much of the whole background research was actually based on fact. I do not really know why I kept listening but the idea of the story intrigued me, and I like books that flip back and forward to different times. However, it just got more and more long winded, spending agonising minutes on descriptions of the main characters feelings that went on and on, all about the same thing. In the end, I fast forwarded most of the second part, and still managed to follow the plot. The ending was disappointing, and a little ridiculous. It's a book I will be deleting, and I am sorry, but won't be looking out for this author again. The only thing that kept me reading was the reader, who coped with accents and pronunciations very well.

Sickining the lack of trust in humanity, I have stopped reading half way the 2nd chapter

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The String Diaries is an intriguing book and very well ready. I loved the part set in the past. The disappointment for me was the end! Way to predictable, I thing Stephen Lloyd Jones ran out of ideas.....shame but still an enjoyable listen.

This is a fab book, it is captivating to the end and the story line is superb. I could not stop listening to it and was upset when it finished. I have never heard of Stephen LLoyd Jones before but will look out for him in the future

    Gripping
    Fast-paced
    Superb

What was one of the most memorable moments of The String Diaries?

When Hannah did't know if Nate really was Nate and she had to verify him quickly

Which character – as performed by Gemma Whelan – was your favourite?

    Hannah

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it made me feel tense, anxious, excited, sad and happy! (Not all at once)

    Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed this audio book. It's taught thriller, describing a centuries old obsessional chase and a fight for survival, with a wonderful twist on the gothic horror genre. Couldn't wait to start listening again and bereft when it finished. Please god there will be many more books in the series.

    "great story, bad editing"

This is well written. Separate timelines and pov's woven well. great build of tension and suspense. I'd highly recommend it for a binge listen.

There are some problems with the narration, the narrator does a good job, however there ate numerous swallowing sounds- throat clearing , quite loud and a bit off putting.

Also the Irish accent was pretty awful, is that how dara o brian, Ardal o hanlon, Liam neeson or Graham Norton speaks? I think it would be worth updating these accents, also the Irish character mentions leprechauns, seriously, leprechauns.

I really enjoyed the unraveling mystery - you are in the edge of your seat from the beginning trying to work out the mystery as you travel through time.
I loved the descriptive language and the narration is excellent

    Story
    "nonsense"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm sure that some readers will enjoy this book. On the whole it is well put together and competently arranged. The problem is with the story itself, a tissue of nonsense and inconsequential mumbo-jumbo. Listening to it I understand that the writer believed in the narrative and thought it a worth while thing to write. I just disagree.

Has The String Diaries put you off other books in this genre?

Yes. I'll be very careful to avoid in future.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Gemma Whelan?

It wouldn't be a consideration. Gemma was fine.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The String Diaries?

Too big a task for me. Won't be improved by tinkering with details.
