Publisher's summary

He gave up the money. He gave up the power. Now all he has left is the law.

Michael Brock is billing the hours, making the money, rushing relentlessly to the top of Drake & Sweeney, a giant DC law firm. One step away from partnership, Michael has it all. Then, in an instant, it all comes undone.

A homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage in the firm's plush offices. When it is all over, the man's blood is splattered on Michael's face - and suddenly Michael is willing to do the unthinkable. Rediscovering a conscience he lost long ago, Michael is leaving the big time for the streets where his attacker once lived - and where society's powerless need an advocate for justice.

But there's one break Michael can't make: from a secret that has floated up from the depths of Drake & Sweeney, from a confidential file that is now in Michael's hands, and from a conspiracy that has already taken lives. Now Michael's former partners are about to become his bitter enemies. Because to them, Michael Brock is the most dangerous man on the streets....

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Awakening

Loved this book. The author really gives an honest depiction of the unseen homeless and how many in this nation choose to turn away. It delves into the cycle of poverty, including underemployment and low wages; effects of addiction and mental illness; and homelessness. It also screams of how the affluent, in many cases, does not understand or care about the homeless. The book was obviously well researched and as usual, the writing sucks you into wanting to finishing the book. I do believe this is the first book from Grisham that has brought me to tears.

John Grisham never disappoints! Loved it!

Liked the book. John Grisham novels are always so good. I always learn so much! I loved the narrator. I have heard him before and he brings the stories to life. I listened to most of the book in one sitting!

not the most likeable character

In this Grisham novel you meet a young lawyer that could have been likeable but ended up being a dumb ass. Several times during the reading you think this kids an idiot. I do like that he gained a heart. Worth the read but not his best.

Very Enlightening!

Once again, John Grisham does not disappoint. Sorry to say that I was completely ignorant of the issues surrounding the homeless prior to listening to this book. Wonderful character development. Loved the book.

Quite informative

If you’re looking for a mystery, then this book may not be for you. But I found it very interesting and eye- opening about the plight of our homeless neighbors.

A Life Changing Moment

This is a good Grisham novel. It has substance. It primarily deals with the subject of homelessness and how the poor are viewed by the society at large, particularly how big business holds money as more important than the lives of homeless women and children. Grisham handles the subject in a sensitive yet entertaining way.

As a result of a life threatening trauma, Michael makes a life changing decision. However, it is my opinion that because of his personality and character, he could have made the life changing decision without the intervening trauma. This is the kind of Grisham that I like, an easy listen. Well narrated by Frank Muller who uses the right amount of skills and performance to bring you right into the story. Recommend....
