The Stranger You Know | [Andrea Kane]

The Stranger You Know

It begins with a chilling phone call to Casey Woods. And ends with another girl dead. College-age girls with long red hair. Brutally murdered, they're posed like victims in a film noir. Each crime scene is eerily similar to the twisted fantasy of a serial offender now serving thirty years to life - a criminal brought to justice with the help of Forensic Instincts. Call. Kill. Repeat. But the similarities are more than one psychopath's desire to outdo another.

Publisher's Summary

It begins with a chilling phone call to Casey Woods. And ends with another girl dead.

College-age girls with long red hair. Brutally murdered, they're posed like victims in a film noir. Each crime scene is eerily similar to the twisted fantasy of a serial offender now serving thirty years to life - a criminal brought to justice with the help of Forensic Instincts.

Call. Kill. Repeat. But the similarities are more than one psychopath's desire to outdo another. As more red haired victims are added to the body count, it becomes clear that each one has been chosen because of a unique connection to Casey - a connection that grows closer and closer to her.

Now the Forensic Instincts team must race to uncover the identity of a serial killer before his ever tightening circle of death closes in on Casey as the ultimate target. As the stalker methodically moves in on his prey, his actions make one thing clear: he knows everything about Casey. And Casey realizes that this psychopath won't stop until he makes sure she's dead.

What works for me are books that involve me quickly with characters. This did and held my attention throughout. I recommend it.

    "Dreadful Performance --story doubtful"

After reading the synopsis, I was not sure if this was for me or not, but as my book club selected it, I had to try it. But I listen through the first chapter, let alone 10 hours. The performer speaks in the audio version of typing in all CAPS! No emotion or modulation, a monotone, and every sentence ended almost in a question. I mean every sentence. Had to return it. Ill try the Kindle version and see if I can power through. The premise of the book, very young forensic genius in downtown NY office, also seems a little out there especially with her crack team of an interactive computer, former "BAU Navy Seal, FBI agent total package guy"., etc...I'm not hopeful, but Ill give it a try. I've been wrong before and admitted it. If I am, I will amend this review...at least for the written version...That's why I gave the story two stars, since I hadn't really gotten into it and it may turn out to be quite good. Benefit of the doubt at this point. The audio version is just plain bad.

"Didn't have a good reaction towards the end...."

Okay...I'll try my best to avoid spoilers...but it will definitely be hard.

I'm a fan of Andrea Kane and the F.I. series..however...THIS book...took ridiculous too far.
Don't get me wrong...the storyline was pretty good, had some interesting twists and developed at a good pace. Now, for the issues...this book made F.I. seem SO incompetent...I wouldn't hire them to find my lost keys.

You find out a key person...may be more involved in the crimes than originally thought...and yet...no questions are raised when you visit alone.
You sense personal danger...and yet...WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
You have a freakin' vision of what's to come and you don't understand it...
The killer knows where your team lives and yet you don't think they'd become a target.
The list could go on and on and on...

By the time this book got to where you know it was going...I was hoping the victims would simply be killed for sheer stupidity. Sorry, Andrea Kane...this book almost kills my love for team Forensic Instincts...their instincts in this particular book were about as useful as a 100 year old corpse. It was as if the team caught a case of the stupids...what a way to ruin a perfectly good storyline. There is a line between "missing" a clue...and being clueless.

I'm also a bit love/hate on Angela Dawe...she does a superb job with the voices of the characters at least distinguishing male/female...however her voice in the general narration drives me bonkers.

    So in short...
    Narration - 3 stars
    Plot - 4 stars
    F. I. - 2 star

"Third Time is not the Charm"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

This being the third book in the series, why did you switch narrators? The original narrator, a male. This one, a female, was hard to listen to. She enunciates at the end of each word.

What did you like best about this story?

    The interaction of the characters.

What didn’t you like about Angela Dawe’s performance?

Her enunciation of the last word in each sentence. IT started to get on my nerves.

    "HORRIBLE NARRATION"

What a mistake purchase. I didn't get through 10 minutes of narration and thought I was listening to my navigation lady voice. I was so put off my voice and lack of inflection and proper exclamations, I thought Angela (narrator) was going to tell me take the nearest UTurn....
Sorry, I no rating for story...

    "Worst narration I ever heard."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

NARRATOR started the story in an annoying sing-song style. If the story hadn't been so great, I would have stopped listening and returned the book. About halfway through the book, the action begins to get more intense, and the narration improved. Once the suspense decreased after catching the killers, the sing-song style returned to the narration. This book would be greatly improved with a new Narrator. I would suggest Susan Ericksen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ryan is my favorite character. I love to see the new inventions he creates in each book, and how he decides to use them to catch the villains. His smart aleck replies are very amusing. The developing relationship between him and Claire is also interesting and adds to the romances found in Ms. Kane's novels.

How could the performance have been better?

Someone from the Audible Publisher's House should have listened to the first hour of the recording. No intelligent person would have ever accepted that annoying narration. Every other review that I read about this audible edition criticizes the narration.

Could you see The Stranger You Know being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I think the FI series would make a great TV series with all the different characters and their individual foibles, the computer genius, the psychic, the ex-seal, the intelligent animal, the behaviorist, and the retired FBI agent. I think young new actors should be given the chance to develop these great characters.

    Any additional comments?

I pre-ordered the 4th book in this collection last week. After listening to it (with a great narrator), I ordered the first three books. The first two were as good as the fourth, only #3, The Stranger You Know, was disappointing. It is a shame that the author doesn't have the right to veto this narration.

"Decent Story Ruined by Terrible Narration"
What would have made The Stranger You Know better?

Believe the other reviews...the worst robotic reading voice I've ever heard.

Would you ever listen to anything by Andrea Kane again?

I enjoy the Forensic Insticts series...the book was OK but ended very abruptly

Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawe’s performances?

    ABSOLUTELY NOT

    "Hideous"
What would have made The Stranger You Know better?

I tried for 30 mins but could not get past the hideous narration. I felt like my GPS was reading the book to me. Weird inflections and you couldn't tell which character was talking. I enjoyed the other Andrea Kane books on audio and was really looking forward to this one. Big disappointment. So big I am writing a review for the 1st time ever.

Lesson learned, checkout the reviews, if I had, I would have seen similar comments to mine. Don't waste a credit!

Would you ever listen to anything by Andrea Kane again?

Yes, as long it is a different narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    hideous

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Didn't listen enough to know the plot
