Amazing Book

I have read many books about the German occupation, and this was one of the best I have encountered. The backstory about Anna and the upir lent such another layer of complexity and poetry to the entire story. If you're not put off by reading about the atrocities of the prisoner camps you may enjoy this book. It is ultimately a story of finding yourself.

Enjoyed the story

I’ve read and listened to several of Jodi Picoult’s books. While I found all but one enjoyable, I believe this is the best that I’ve encountered. Each of her books leaves me feeling that I’ve learned something new. Her research is so in-depth. This book gave me insight into how and why my Grandfather could find humor and tell jokes about his experiences in the small East Texas Town and surrounding communities, where he and his parents lived and raised families. His parents were slaves in their youth. These were often slavery jokes that had been passed down. I’d think, “That’s disgusting!” A person gets so accustomed to even the most disgusting cruelty that it becomes so commonplace that in hindsight, it’s funny.

Swept up, listen to this book!

Riveting story, had me guessing at every page how this would end. Emotionally charged storyline - and I left with a larger understanding from a different point of view and feeling even more empathy and love for each person held captive and their family members.

Loved it!

Although posts of it were difficult to read, the different timelines and perspectives provided some relief from the horrors of the concentration camp. I loved all the characters and the ending was wonderful.

Eye opening!

Made me look into the history more about nazi crimes. It made me sick to my stomach in some parts, made me gasp in others and cry at several. This was OUTSTANDING!

Difficult to follow

I absolutely love Jodi Picoult books, but this one was hard to follow in the audio format. Perhaps reading it might be completely different. I was not expecting the flashback, which was difficult to listen to. I even had to stop the book for a few days.
Not my favorite from this author but still a good read.

Amazing book.

This book had a little bit of a slow start, but once it kicked off, it was amazing. I could not stop listening. I was enthralled by all the stories that were inner twined. There was just the right amount of surprise and expectation. I really love Jody Picoult, and this was one of the best books she’s written, in my opinion
