Could not put this down! So good

Once I started I just had to keep going although I admit there were times I had to stop and clear my mind because the content was so intense.

One of a kind for this author. Great narration, and enunciation. Nailed accents.

Started this book and couldn’t stop I had to listen on my AirPods so I couldn’t do all my things with minimal distractions. One of the best I’ve had the pleasure of listening in some time. It is definitely very sad, Minka and Josef blew my mind at the end, turned it all on its head. Plot twisty. If you’re interested in WW2 and Nazi Germany this is your book.

amazing!!

Jodi Picoult never fails to make me believe the characters in her story + the events are all real. I was researching afterwards expecting to find Minka's story. Forgot this was historical fiction for a moment haha. I was transported back to Nazi Germany and felt each and every one of Minka's emotions. Without knowing the author I probably would've been more surprised at any twists she added, but there were still parts where I gasped! this is now the 6th book I've read by her and 100% worth the read/listen.

The voice actors did a great job making me believe they were really these characters!

Trigger Warning - sensitive Holocaust subject being discussed and lots of violence, death, abuse etc.

Excellent!

An intense, poignant story based on a huge tragedy in history, told with sensitivity and compassion.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to try to understand the complexity that we are as human beings.

Could not stop listening!

The paralell story lines were stunning! It is not a happy story. The horrors of the Holocaust cannot be overstated, and the author does not hold back. While at the same time telling another story that crashes into the first, while another happier story ties it all together. The detail and character development are top notch throughout. Narrators pitch perfect. Truly an excellent listen.

very compelling!

I usually try to avoid reading fictional books about the Holocaust. It's such a difficult subject, and while I think it's important for us as a society to evaluate how it could have happened, and certainly to never forget that it happened, it's just not generally a good topic for a work of fiction, in my opinion. But, that said, I do think that this was an important account, which mixes fiction and history in an extremely compelling story. There are really three separate stories being told. 1. Sage Singer's story; 2. Anya's story; 3. Minka's story. And several other more minor but perhaps equally important stories, 4. Josef, of course; 5. Leo; 6. Mary; 7. Adam. Possibly the combination of all those stories being told and woven together was too much? Not sure. Nonetheless I was completely mesmerized throughout, and I thought about this book a lot even when I wasn't reading, and that is always the sign of a well-written, thought-provoking book. I didn't figure out who Josef really was until his last utterance, so again, well done writing. I have one minor criticism, which is that some of the nuance use of language was in English, but the language at the point in the story would have been Polish, so it didn't make sense that any puns or double entendre would have been in English. Other than that, I would highly recommend this book.

What a way to tell a story.

This was so wonderfully written with the story so brilliantly told. The narrators were excellent. The emotions the writer was able to evoke with this was amazing.

Great Banned Book!

Thank you Jodi for this amazing work of art. We can never forget. Kind of interesting how a book that’s about the Nazi’s is banned but you know that already. We need to keep fighting for the right of free speech. Thank you for all you do to protect our freedom.

Tugs at the heart!

Interesting all the way through. Was a bit confusing when it jumped back and forth. But loved the story.
