But when the charred remains of a body are discovered in the embers of the town's annual Bonfire Night celebration, everyone is horrified when it becomes clear that they belong to Mr Heygate.

Mr Gervase Quinnell of the South Devon Railway contacts Scotland Yard for their assistance, and Superintendant Edward Tallis sends the Railway Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant Victor Leeming to Exeter with all due haste. They quickly unearth three suspects, but are they missing something?

It is only when Heygate's diary turns up unexpectedly that the truth becomes clear and a fourth suspect emerges. As Colbeck closes in on the killer, he finds himself in mortal danger - can justice prevail?

"Stationmaster not his best but still......"

a very good yarn, Edward Marston give you a feel for the era with the characters in the story. But saying that the main characters could with a shake up/ change as Tallis is still Tallis of old and is not growing or mellowing to Colbeck or his sergeant and is wearing a bit thin you know what is coming when they walk into his office. But for all that I like these characters and still care about them but probably there is a need to introduce a new main one to stop them from becoming stale and more predictable, a wife for Maddie's father might do the trick? One with a checkered past maybe?
