Publisher's summary

Detective Isaac Bell, hero of The Chase and The Wrecker, returns in the remarkable new adventure from the number-one New York Times best-selling author.

It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship-gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name.

Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder. And when more suspicious deaths follow, it becomes clear that someone - an elusive spy - is orchestrating the destruction of America's brightest technological minds....and the murders all connect to a top-secret project called Hull 44.

But that is just the beginning. As the intrigue deepens, Bell will find himself pitted against German, Japanese, and British spies, in a mission that encompasses dreadnought battleships, Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Isaac Bell has certainly faced perilous situations before, but this time it is more than the future of his country that's at stake - it's the fate of the world.

great story with one of the best narrators around.

I've listened and read many of Clive Cussler's books and they've all been exceptional. Scott Brick is the perfect choice of narrators to capture Isaac's persona. Just very well done.

Great Spy Story

Very well done. Loved that the story was not modern yet showed how spies shaped the history books.

CC at his best

If you like CC's style and his period writings from 'The Chase' then you will also like this tale of international intrigue during the arms race prior to WWI.

Not as strong as the last two, but still great!

To me, this 3rd book in the series was not quite as strong as the previous two, but was still a great book. The main character, Bell, was every bit as charming and strong in this one, but the story was just a bit more of a stretch. Again, a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent book. Can't wait to move in to book 4!

Oh Bell! You’re Amazing!

The characters were quite intriguing. The plot twists were riveting and fun. The close encounters for Isaac’s demise were well written, yet fairly predictable. Over all - thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Entertaining

Isaac Bell and the Van Dorn agency is introduced into the worl of espionage. It has more surprises and unexpected happenings than I'm used to with Cussler. The characters are a bit predictible in their actions but it is still entertaining. The ending was a surprise. Scott Brick does an excellent job as narrator. Personally, I prefer his novels in our current times, but that is just my preference.

Great crime mystery

Scott Brick does another outstanding job as a multi-voiced narrator... he's simply the best. As for the book, another Clive Cussler (and Justin Scott) work of art. Incredible research into the history of naval operations, New York and Washington D.C. in circa 1905 which are the setting for this crime mystery of the time. Interesting, suspenseful, outstanding characters (which only Brick can bring to life) and a great story to boot. Loved the book!
