Publisher's summary

Detective Isaac Bell, hero of The Chase and The Wrecker, returns in the remarkable new adventure from the number-one New York Times best-selling author.

It is 1908, and international tensions are mounting as the world plunges toward war. When a brilliant American battleship-gun designer dies in a sensational apparent suicide, the man's grief-stricken daughter turns to the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency to clear her father's name.

Van Dorn puts his chief investigator on the case, and Isaac Bell soon realizes that the clues point not to suicide but to murder. And when more suspicious deaths follow, it becomes clear that someone - an elusive spy - is orchestrating the destruction of America's brightest technological minds....and the murders all connect to a top-secret project called Hull 44.

But that is just the beginning. As the intrigue deepens, Bell will find himself pitted against German, Japanese, and British spies, in a mission that encompasses dreadnought battleships, Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Isaac Bell has certainly faced perilous situations before, but this time it is more than the future of his country that's at stake - it's the fate of the world.

Another wonderful story

Though a little bored down, in the middle, the story line was great. From beginning to end many twists and turns as to keep one in guessing about.

Great book

I wasn't sure how the third book would hold up after two stories with too many similarities to call the greatest on literature but this book took a turn that was so ingenious it had me buying the next one in the series. Great read.

Historical Adventure

I am not a naval buff or generally interested in naval history, but this story was full of adventure and a good historical look at life at the turn of the 20th century. My husband is a Cussler fan, so I decided to try it. We listened to it together on a long road trip and I was totally absored in the story. If you are interested in fast action, naval vessels, spy tactics, and 'manly men', you will like this story.

Another riveting yarn. Cussler does it again

Cussler builds the story slowly and with several twisted plots. Bringing it all together at a world saving end.

Another winner from Cussler

I prefer the train stories, but this was good too. The fledgling US Navy was interesting.

Enjoyable read

The book has all of the intrigue and suspense of a classic spy novel. Allot of it takes place in New York City and, being a native, it was fun to track the locations. But the book goes beyond that in complexity and the narraton is supurb.

I think this is one Cussler's best

Great fictional story intertwined with history

Interesting story during the birth of our navel history. Incorporating real world events and a diabolical plot.
