York, 1914. An army enlistment notice is pinned up in the railway police office. Detective Sergeant Jim Stringer recognises that he must do his patriotic duty and join what would become known as the Railway Pals and set sail for France. July 1916, the first day of the Somme. Friendships and enmities have already been born among the Pals. Before they departed for France, a member of Jim’s unit was murdered. Jim and his comrades operate the trains carrying munitions to the Front by night. Close co-operation and trust are vital.
