Publisher's summary

In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.

Great story on this one.

Any additional comments?

I have several of the Rizzoli an Isles books. This is the best one. Good story.

Good, strong characters

The plot didn't just pop out of the story, it worked its way out! Good story. I like the characters, and how they are developing together.

The Silent Girl

Tess never fails. Keeps you guessing. I was up way too late most nights, figuratively turning pages.

Pretty good story - Poorly read.

The central story here is a pretty good mystery, although I had it pretty well figured out long before the end. It's really a Rizzoli story with almost no Isles. There is a side story with Maura Isles that refers back to a previous book and has absolutely nothing to do with the current mystery, and goes absolutely nowhere. It seems to be included just to have Maura in the book.
The narration is very disappointing - to the point that I have downgraded my rating from what could have been a 4 in the hands of a more competent reader. Tanya Eby's interpretation of the text and her voicing of the characters was enough of a distraction to prevent me from really getting into the story - her voices for the male characters were especially bad. I will have to pass on downloading books with her as the reader in the future, even for titles I would otherwise consider.

Good Book

I enjoyed this book even though the narrator was a little annoying. Tess Gerritsen writes a really good story that was easy to listen too.

A fair and slow paced mystery.

I enjoyed the ‘Silent Girl’. It contained eastern mysticism, a well written plot, and a twisted and a surprising ending. The narration wasn’t the best and I think that spoilt my enjoyment of the book. Otherwise, I would totally recommend it.

A Quietly Engaging Mystery

The Silent Girl by Tess Gerritsen is an engaging mystery set in the culture of the Chinese American community. Gerritsen depends on the fact that this novel is the ninth in a series to present well sculpture characters. If the reader/listener is unfamiliar with the previous Rizzoli & Isles some of the reoccurring characters may appear shallow. However the puzzle of the mystery keeping the reader/listener guessing until the exciting climax and epilogue.
