Carole Seddon hates Christmas – it all seems rather a waste of time. So when her best friend, Jude, drags her along to go shopping at a local store called Gallimaufry, she can feel her inner-Scrooge knocking. Then Gallimaufry is burnt down and a body is discovered. It seems like a tragic accident, but it’s not natural causes when a gun is involved.
With a host of suspicious characters – the infamous womanizer Ricky Le Bonnier; Piers Duncton, an unfunny comedy writer; or Anna Carter, the lonely dog walker – the lady detectives know they have their work cut out for them. It seems that someone in Fethering has a deep, dark, deadly secret – and is prepared to kill to keep it.

Writer, painter and unabashed romantic with passion for history and mystery.
Fans of Brett and his tart and savvy Fethering heroines of a certain age, Carolyn and Jude, will savor this well plotted mystery. As an added bonus, vetern actor Brett reads his own tale with high style. The voices come alive and vividly capture the personalities of a wildly diverse cast.
This is a really good series. Carole and Jude are together again to see that justice is done in Fethering. They go about it in there unique busy body fashion that manages to never be offensive. I really enjoy this series and wish that all of the books were in the audible library.
I've been listening to Simon Brett read his own books for 20 years. I wish there were more available here rather than the other narrators, they just don't work for me.
Enjoyed this one immensely. A lovely dry sardonic wit, with a perceptive eye for people's quirky characteristics.
