    "Different spin"
Would you listen to The Servants of Twilight again? Why?

I love Dean Koontz and will probably always give his books a chance but this one was a bit slow in some spots. I would not listen to this book (or read) it again. At times it just seemed to drag on and on...the endless descriptions of every little detail just sort of turned in to bla...bla...bla after a while. The narrator was a bit grating at first, then, kind of fell in to the flow of things in the second part. Don't think I could listen to this again but it was enjoyable enough for a one time listen.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were diverse and for the most part unpredictable which I think added to the appeal of the story. Things picked up in the second half and made the book a worthwhile listen.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator was not exactly bad, but, at first, she just didn't seem to be a good fit for this novel. Towards the second part of the book, her performance either got better or I got used to her style.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, not one way or the other but the overall story was pretty interesting.

    Any additional comments?

A young mother and son are threatened by a cult convinced that the son is the anti-christ...they are joined by a private eye and are on the run. It was handy for them that money was not an issue, when they needed cars, guns, hideouts...they all fell in to place. One of the sad parts for me was the pain the child had to end. The story and narrator both picked up towards the end of the book. Of course, there is the ending...

I find long and drawn out reviews tiring and for the most part very unhelpful so I try to keep my reviews short and if I've left out some information that some might find helpful in deciding whether or not to purchase this book please forgive me. In the end we all have to make our own decisions and as I've discovered in the past you can't always depend on just a few reviews. Some of the shortest reviews have been most helpful to me and some, no matter how long or rambling or descriptive have not been.

    "Bad Narration"
Would you try another book from Dean Koontz and/or Angela Dawe?

By Dean Koontz absolutely - but not narrated by Angela Dawe

If you’ve listened to books by Dean Koontz before, how does this one compare?

The narration is so wonky that it takes away from the story. The voice used when not talking as a particular character is terrible. Every sentence sounds the same with the last word drawn out in a wierd annoying way.

    "A Good Listen!"
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I wanted to. It hardly seemed like 15 hours. The suspense kept me engaged. I read this many years ago when first published and I've seen the movie but the audiobook still had me glued to the earphones. If you are a Dean Koontz fan it's a must listen. The narrator's voice seemed a bit shrill at first but I soon forgot all about it. Overall a very good experience.

    "Exciting but Simplistic Old Koontz"

I had read this many years ago under the title Twilight and I did not notice this was the same book before I ordered it. It is pretty early Koontz and, although the writing is better than most in the genre, this is substantially below Koontz's best work. The characterizations are somewhat weak, and the story, although exciting, is a little simplistic. I really did not like the narration which was a bit nasal and really grated on me. I did learn to live with the narration, but never liked it. The story and characters kept me interested but not really engaged. The end was very mildly unexpected and unlike most Koontz is mildly enigmatic. There is one R rated sex scene which might bother some people and some treatment of religion that some might find sacrilegious. I certainly would not listen to this again with this narrator.

    "Good story, poor reading"
What did you like best about The Servants of Twilight? What did you like least?

Like most Dean Koontz stories this had plenty of detail and could really get the reader to vividly picture the scenes.

I did think the ending a bit unlikely even for this genre of story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was clipped and seemed to lack emphasis and emotion. I alas most cringed every time the narrator tried to speak in Joey,s voice, and her deep throaty attempts at masculine voices was almost comical.

"Not Dean's best, a little light on reality"
Would you try another book from Dean Koontz and/or Angela Dawe?

    Dean, yes.
Angela Dawe, NO. Too shrill in delivery, sounds like she;s shouting all the way through the story. Shouting does not indicate tension to me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

A different take on a cult story.

How could the performance have been better?

Using a more realistic tone would help, along with better modulation or variety in delivery. The boy's voice was OK.

Could you see The Servants of Twilight being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not every story should be a movie.

    Any additional comments?

    no

What disappointed you about The Servants of Twilight?

The narator is monotone with no excitement behind the read.

Would you recommend The Servants of Twilight to your friends? Why or why not?

The book was good but the audio file stinks.

Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawe’s performances?

    No

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    "Story great - narration horrible"

I love Dean Koontz, I have read all of his books. This one is excellent as are of all his others. However, the narrator is horrible. She emphasizes the wrong word or wrong syllable. She ends the sentences oddly, drawing out the last syllable too long. The child’s voice is too squeaky. I will not purchase another book narrated by her.
