Publisher's Summary

Ann Kinnear has created a peaceful existence at her cabin in the Adirondack woods. But the calm is shattered after Philadelphia socialite Elizabeth Firth is reported missing. With few clues and fewer options, detective Joe Booth calls upon Ann's spirit sensing abilities to help solve the mystery. With Joe and her brother Mike, Ann attempts to uncover what Elizabeth's husband may be hiding beneath his cloak of wealth and privilege. As Ann is drawn deeper into a web of lies and betrayal, she realizes she may be racing against time to keep herself from disappearing too.

    "Seeing Beneath the surface"

If I had to describe this book in one word, that word would be solid. The plotting is careful, and because it is, suspension of disbelief is not stretched so far that things become distorted. The characters are very well drawn, and even some of the minor characters are believably and charmingly human. Even the villain of the piece, though entirely despicable, is believable, though he is complicated enough that understanding his motivations and reactions takes some time and a bit of serious thought. At first, my reaction was that a person of his background and insipidness couldn’t be either smart enough or cunning enough to do what he did, in the ways he did. However …as with most essentially weak people, he uses certain other traits and tendencies to manage his actions and interactions, so, in the end even he works ..rather well, in fact.

One of the things I really liked about this book was the way in which the paranormal elements were handled. They were treated seriously, but they weren’t over emphasized, or mystified in any way. Anne could do what she could do, and, despite her self-doubts and self esteem issues, she absolutely knew and understood that her abilities were simply a part of her, just as tied to who she was as her eye color, her height, or her build. On a very basic level, she accepted both who she was, and what she could do, and that was heartening.

The writing is excellent too, and fits the parameters of the story perfectly. It is straightforward yet interesting, and, if anything just a bit understated. This becomes especially apparent in the extremely dramatic and touching scenes in the book, and the writing never overshadows the story itself.

The narrator was excellent. She voiced each character appropriately, and her phrasing and enunciation were perfect, as was her tempo and shaping. My only minor issue with the editing of the recording was that the pause between chapters was so long that it took a couple of chapters for me to adjust to it. At first, I found myself being concerned that something had happened either to the recording or to my computer. Once I made the adjustment, though, the long pause between chapters just became part of the listening experience.

I can unreservedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery …even if you aren’t fond of paranormal elements. They won’t get in your way, because this author knows how to handle them, and make them actually support and enhance her story.

I am pleased to be able to give both book and narrator 5 full stars.

    "Very good book"
What did you love best about The Sense of Death?

Karma/Justice was delivered in the end to Mr. Firth

What did you like best about this story?

In the beginning it was a little hard to get into the story but by about the 3rd or 4th chapter, I was able to crawl inside this book. You know it's a good book when you reach that stage. It contained a lot of mystery and intrigue. The husband Mr. Firth tried to throw off the detectives with his actions by trying to do them opposite of what was expected.

Which character – as performed by Sarah E. Purdum – was your favorite?

Ann- The ghost sensor and her dog Bo. The ending scene of Bo was a blessing for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it was too long of a book so I planned to listen when I could.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed listening to this book and how the author developed the characters. It was easy to follow and I didn't feel like I was missing anything as I listened.

    "Promising Debut"

When a prominent socialite disappears, her murderer has a good chance of escaping justice, but Ann Kinnear's ability to see spirits is something the killer never counted on. This book isn't a mystery, per se, as the listener knows who done it early in the book. But Dalrymple offers insights into the killer that many novelists fail to provide, making this almost like a true crime expose. The real meat of the book is Ann, a wonderful character whose psychic talents have limits and costs. I also liked the performance quite a lot. Sarah Purdum narrates in a non dramatic style that is perfect for this material, inflected and nuanced, but moving the story in a straight forward.manner--she has a lovely voice and was a pleasure to hear. This audiobook was provided by the author at no charge in exchange for an honest review, and my non-biased opinion includes the fact that I very much look forward to more from the writer

The story was ok but it dragged on for too long. There was also incredibly long pauses between the chapters that made me wonder if something was wrong with my iPod.

    Any additional comments?

This book started out wonderfully then about half way through I kept waiting for Ann's powers, for lack of a better word, to kick in. In my opinion her special talent didn't really do much. I wanted to like this book but couldn't. The narrator did an excellent job and maybe if I stick with the series hopefully the main character, Ann, will have developed her special talent a bit more. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

    "Interesting"

Very predictable, great read/listen another who done it but proving it was a different story, bring in a psychic end results same as all others, the story line was believable up to a point but good. To long of a pause at the start and end of each chapter. Made me think Audible turned off.

"The sense of a good book!"

Yeah, this smells like a good book, and i like that smell. Okey maybe it is a BIT boring at some points! It dragged along slowly at times. The middle of this 9 hrs and 26 mins feels a bit long! There is nothing else to say! I like the beginning, and loved the end, but yeah the middle of the books feels a bit "meh". The Sense of Death is a good book in other ways! This is my first Matty Dalrymple book, and i want more from her! I think maybe it is one of those names you will hear about again: Matty Dalrymple write it down!

Talking about writing things down: Sarah E. Purdum is a name you REALLy should write dow, and she narrates this book in a non dramatic style that is perfect for this material! I think i would enjoy her less then i did, and that is somewhat surprising when it comes to me! Her voice is "dry", and that fits this like nothing else! She has this lovely voice and was a pleasure to hear when it was somewhat boring too!

    "Paranormal Mystery"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Overall it was time well spent. I feel though that it moved slow at times and could of had at least an hour edited out of the book.

Would you recommend The Sense of Death to your friends? Why or why not?

I would to friends who like paranormal mysteries, however on the whole it would not be on the top of my recommendation list.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was well done and did match the pace of the book.

Could you see The Sense of Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I think it would make for a good series. It would definitely be better than most of the movies that are out there. I have no one in mind for the staring roles.

    Any additional comments?

The book was an okay listen, however especially in the middle, it dragged along slowly at times and I found myself dozing off. It picked up towards the end and got much more interesting and active.“I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast dot come”

    "Interesting take on the paranormal"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I thought the story was interesting and well written. Even though you know 'who did it' it is the process of how the others in the story discover 'who did it' that makes this a good read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sense of Death?

How Ann's negative experience led to her discovery of her abilities that she did not know existed. I also liked the final scenes with Bo and the paint can..

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The pace was fine but I enjoy more emotion and inflection rather than a very controlled, succinct style.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have I probably would as I wanted to see what direction the author was taking this story and what the main characters would do next.
