Publisher's Summary

A leading terrorism analyst is found brutally murdered in Amsterdam. The Dutch police believe it is the work of a deranged extremist - but others know better. Gabriel Allon is called in to make discreet inquiries. It would seem that the dead man was close to uncovering the plans of a major terrorist operation.

The trail leads to London, when a young woman vanishes. She is the daughter of the American ambassador - and the god-daughter of the president of the United States - and the kidnappers' demands are at once horrifically clear and clearly impossible to meet. Allon engages in a desperate search for the missing woman - but the truth, when he finds it, is not what he expects.

I'm so gutted I've read this one first and not the previous books in the series! Just downloaded as it just interested me wasn't expecting much but wow! well written, got pacey in parts, quiet and suspenseful in others and extremely cruel in places, winced at places but read this 10 hour book in two sittings and didn't get much sleep!

    Story
    "Fair spy thriller"

This is the first book in this series that I have read, focused unusually on an Israeli assassin. This well-read, quite pacy story clips along, but stretches credibility quite a long way: this chap is in his mid-to late fifties, but romps around like the most bullet-proof of super-heroes, shrugging off severe beatings to take down the bad guys in the finale. Also, he waltzes through various competing agencies so as to always be at the right place at the right time. Except of course, when he is not too busy restoring Old Masters for the Pope. All of this is fine as long as you do not take it too seriously.

What I find somewhat unsettling though, is the absolute acceptance and indeed enthusiasm for the kind of no-holds barred approach to counter-terrorism that probably makes me one of the naive liberals that get short shrift in this novel. Extraordinary rendition and torture are "the only way" in this caper. Putting bullet after bullet into a prisoner until he spills the beans is just the way it has to be. I am not sure I buy that, but maybe that is why I need super-heroes like this to keep me safe from Islamic monsters who would have me under Sharia law as soon as I could say Inshallah.

So if you are comfy with that kind of political message, and prefer your spies more comic-book even than Bond, then this is the book for you. If you want something a bit more nuanced, balanced and thoughtful, you might join me in looking elsewhere.
