When the Secretary of the Navy's nephew says he believes that two colleagues at a U.S. naval base may be committing fraud, his uncle is skeptical. Reluctant to launch an official investigation based on a relative's vague suspicions, the secretary asks House Speaker, John Mahoney, to send his troubleshooter, DeMarco, to check out the story. As DeMarco and his friend Emma, a retired CIA agent, began to investigate what they thought was a low-stakes government swindle, they come to the terrifying realization that an espionage ring has infiltrated the naval base.
The leader of the espionage cell is a woman with whom Emma has a history that goes back to the cold war. Their encounter destroyed the woman's once promising career and turned her into a ruthless operative who cares about only one thing: destroying Emma, the person responsible for her shame, dishonor, and shattered life. DeMarco has never been near a spy in his life, at least not that he knew of, and now he's dealing with a foreign agent who is more deadly than anyone he's ever encountered.

"At once a solid thriller and a revealing look behind the scenes of American politics, the tale will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers." (Booklist)
I just listened to both of Michael's books, 'The Inside Ring' and 'The Second Perimeter'. I want more. Good action, keeps interest level high, and the 2ns book (The Second Perimeter) is even better than the first.
I have been a member of Audible for about a year and have listened to most of the books that have been recommended to me in the past. Currently I go thought about 5-7 books a month and I love this service. But for the past few months I have run out of book and authors that I know and want to read so I have relaying on the recommendations for other members. I want to thank everyone that takes the time to write their views of the books they have listened to as this is a great help to me when selecting my next book.
Sorry I will now get to the review. I loved this book. Scott Brick is a great narrator and truly brings the books to life. This book started fast paced and kept it all the way through. I am excited to go back and listen to the first book.
Finding the mysteries and thrills of life and spirituality.
I can't get enough of Lawson's characters. He truly weaves a web in this book as we find out more about the mysterious past of the female character. I hope Lawson will write a prequel someday delving into more of her past. And it can't go unspoken that Scott Brick is by far the best reader of the books I've listened to. The man ACTS the books that he reads and adds character to the characters. I highly recommend this reader as well as this author.
Better than the Inside Line (but I enjoyed that one too). Great story, plot, dialogue. Highly recommended.
I haven't read the print verson
DeMarco. Here's a hero that's a little out of the norm. A lawyer who's never practiced law, works for a corrupt politician, yet gets the job done despite his boss
Scott Brick brings life to every book he narrates! "The Voice" infuses the characters with a personality.....charm, anger, frustration....emotions that don't always come through on a black and white page.
Not your ordinary hero......
I listen to and have recently started to write reviews. I've found the reviews have helped me to select books.
I enjoy action, good character development, series, protagonist with a purpose, spies and a first rate author's book being read by a first rate narrator.
Lucy was my favorite character because she was a leader who took control of a situation. She was fearless in the face of danger. Although her strong personality did interfere with her ability to act rationally when in the face of failure, Lucy was always ready to use her mind and try to circumvent those who stood in her way. Lucy never gave up her dream of becoming the most celebrated spy of Russia.
I can't actually choose any one character. His narration skills are one of the best among narrator's. Therefore, I think all of the character's were well done.
Yes, but I started the book too late at night and wasn't able to stay awake.
I am looking forward to listening to the next book in the series. DeMarco , a young man with a law degree who can't practice as a lawyer because his father was involved with the mafia and Emma, an older woman, who had worked behind the scenes for the CIA, has now become an excellent field agent, are a great team. They can be very focused and serious but are also funny and make me laugh. The book was interesting from the beginning to the end. Purchasing this book or using a credit would be worth it.
