Publisher's summary

Published for the first time under his own name, a dark and haunting story from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.

Like his father before him, Brian Holloway is a safe man. That is, his specialty is opening safes. Every job is a little mystery, and he has yet to encounter a lock he can't break or a box he can't crack. But the day Holloway gets called in to open a rare, antique safe in a famous author's library, his skills open a door that should have remained closed.

In this haunting and singular story, previously published anonymously, Michael Connelly proves once again that he is "superb at building suspense.... the reader can never be sure what sudden turns the plot may take" (Wall Street Journal).

Not worth a credit for this audible

I did not feel the value of 1 credit was a good price for the one hour audible

A Different Connelly.

This is so different to the Michael Connelly I am used to. It is a short story and I don't want to spoil it so all I will say is that if you love Michael's books, you will love this. It is just different.

Michael Connelly Should Write More Ghost Stories

Like everything Michael Connelly does, this was well-written and a lot of fun. I was intrigued by the idea of him writing a ghost story and exploring characters that are a big departure from Bosch and Haller; he does a great job and I'd love to see him explore this further.

It's a short listen, so I wouldn't blow a whole credit on it, but after using my credits it was was worth buying as a standalone piece.

Good narration, also.

A Little Off The Beaten Path...

Connelly does Supernatural? OK, I'll bite. Walks some well-traveled narrative roads, but Connelly keeps it moving and Collins sells it well...

Michael Connelly surprises

Would you listen to The Safe Man again? Why?

This is not typical M Connelly. This clever little story combines magic and fate in a twisted story that amuses.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. It is not a murder mystery, but a mystery like the magician's magic box in which a person can disappear. Mysterious safe and magical results are the keywords for this short story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Could have been longer

What made the experience of listening to The Safe Man the most enjoyable?

this was a Michael Connelly story and I normally like all of his stories. not saying that i didn't like this one but it wasn't what i expected. I actually had to listen to it twice there were some parts of the book that I had to do double listens on. What got me what when Lucy called him "Box Man".

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes the plot did keep me on the edge of my seat. I was a bit lost when he was seeing things and couldn't make it out, and then when the guy told him about the death of his friends brother when the friend also opened a safe similar to the one that Brian opened.

What does David W. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

he had me spooked at one point but that could have also been the book and the plot of the book. he did bring some emotion to the book while reading the conversations between Brian and his wife.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

no not really. my mouth dropped a bit when the book informed you of how old the daughter was and you figured out that the 15 yr old is not the little girl that the safe man encountered.

Short but gripping - a different Michael Connelly

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes; great story, with surprises you don't expect from the Detective Bosh, Lincoln Lawyer author. Pleasantly surprised. Its short, and good.

Near as bright as O'Henry!

Interesting character sketches, a clear sense of place, crisp writing, and a tight plot, combine to make for an entertaining story.
