Publisher's summary

The year is 1703. The place: The Carolina settlement of Charles Town. Matthew Corbett, professional 'problem solver,' has accepted a lucrative, if unusual, commission: Escorting a beautiful woman to a fancy dress ball.

What should be a pleasant assignment takes a darker turn when Matthew becomes involved in a murder investigation. A sixteen-year-old girl has been stabbed to death on the grounds of a local plantation. The suspected killer is a slave who has escaped, with two family members, into the dubious protection of a nearby swamp. Troubled by certain discrepancies and determined to see some sort of justice done, Matthew joins the hunt for the runaway slaves. He embarks on a treacherous journey up the Solstice River, also known as the River of Souls. He discovers that something born of the swamp has joined the hunt...and is stalking the hunters with more than murder in mind.

What follows is a shattering ordeal encompassing snakes, alligators, exiled savages, mythical beasts, and ordinary human treachery. The journey up the River of Souls will test Matthew's courage, commitment, and powers of endurance. It will also lead him to a confrontation with a figure from his recent past, which will alter Matthew's life, setting the stage for the next installment in this compulsively readable series.

Gripping, unsettling, and richly atmospheric, The River of Souls is a masterful historical adventure and a major addition to Robert McCammon's extraordinary body of work. Featuring the continuing exploits of a young hero USA Today has called 'the Early American James Bond.'

Good...but poor Matthew!

I love this series, however the sheer agony that Matthew goes through in each book is a little tiresome! I am going to finish the series because it is so well written and performed! Love the historical aspect as well!

Not up to earlier Corbetts

Ending seemed contrived to make you want to listen to the next book in the series but it didn't seem to. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and left the book without a closing. Don't yet know if I will listen to the next one. Perhaps I have just had enough of Matthew, to whom I have given many hours.

listen!

The Matthew Corbett series is fantastic. This book was a quick one but still an excellent adventure.

Definately not the authors best

Storyline feels half-baked and rushed like author forgot to finish the book or is out of ideas...
lots of cliche characters and plot points (can’t say twists bc are not remotely so) especially the ending ..disappointing as was quite good until the last 1/4 of the story —
I actually debated whether to bother finishing it ..not sure will risk the next book in the series...

Excellent

Excellent story, wordplay, and narration. Surprised not to find many books narrated by Eduardo Ballerini.

Short book...

I love the story line, but I do feel this one was cut rather short. Without giving away the plot, I feel like the story could have gone longer at the end.

Where's Matthew?

I enjoyed the first 4 books in this series. They were entertaining and well-plotted. The cast of characters we're multi-dimensional . This book seems to have been written by someone else. The story is very linear, as well as predictable. The main character, Matthew Corbett, wanders through the tale injured and confused.
It was quite disappointing - but the performance is excellent. I hope book #6 will be better.

the story was shorter than the other series titles but no less thrilling. my only lament was that exodus Jerusalem still has yet to be punched right in his stuff prick face. hoping that happens......Robert? please?

blah

Read like a summary of previous books in series. No real substance to it. Disappointing
