"This is a book of great renown....Its beautifully sustained atmosphere...adds poetry, and...real mystery." (Ian Fleming)
I listen to audiobooks mainly while commuting 90 minutes a day and when walking. Sometimes when knitting.
Just finished Part One and am really enjoying listening to this novel set just prior to World War I on the North Sea coast of Germany. It involves two young Englishmen sailing the coast in a small boat looking for German spies. The narrator is excellent and if you like sailing, intrigue and dry British humor, I highly recommend it. The writing is much better than your average spy story and the descriptions of the sea and the boat and the coast are quite poetic. I wish there was another book available by the same author.
I read the reviews of the other copies of this book that had audio problems in the past. I am grateful that this remake was done. This is a remarkable story for many reasons. It is so well written, suspenseful, colorful characters , interesting topic. I can't believe this is the only book written by this author. I find myself wanting to know more about the author and his background in intelligence.
Yes, I would recommend, and especially for those who enjoy sailing and all things Naval. This veteran of the Navy and avid sailor certainly appreciated it. I think it would be good enough to satisfy the average land lubber, but certainly the appeal would be strongest for the nautically minded.
It was great to guess along with the characters as to the activities and intentions of the Germans, also, it fleshes out background strategic details of WWI naval history that continue to fascinate.
Certainly all the sailing and nautical details that permeated the entire book.
