Publisher's summary

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.

Who is the Racketeer? And what does he have to do with the judge’s untimely demise? His name, for the moment, is Malcolm Bannister. Job status? Former attorney. Current residence? The Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland.

On paper, Malcolm’s situation isn’t looking too good these days, but he’s got an ace up his sleeve. He knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and he knows why. The judge’s body was found in his remote lakeside cabin. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

What was in the safe? The FBI would love to know. And Malcolm Bannister would love to tell them. But everything has a price—especially information as explosive as the sequence of events that led to Judge Fawcett’s death. And the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday....

Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Disappointed

Not as good as Grisham's other books. Started out good, but lost me as it progressed. Narrator was good though

Fun listen but not a great novel.

Entertaining, fun, and an easy listen. Not the great american novel. Recommend it for a long road trip.

THE BEST GRISHAM EVER!

Would you listen to The Racketeer again? Why?

I would listen to this book again and again! The reader is spot on, the story is intriguing, and best of all.....you never see the end coming!

What about J.D. Jackson’s performance did you like?

He makes the story sound as though he actually lived the events!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Slow and steady gets them every time!

Any additional comments?

This was one of those books I just wanted to drive another 100 miles so I could listen to more!

Big unexpected turn

Would you listen to The Racketeer again? Why?

Possibly. The story took a rather unexpected turn midway through and went straight to a top listen.

What did you like best about this story?

The unexpected change in the story and the ending.

Any additional comments?

Better than the past few Grisham books by a good bit.

A hard listen

Would you try another book from John Grisham and/or J.D. Jackson?

From John Grisham, yes I love him. From J.D. Jackson, probably but he sounds like he is reading it, not getting into the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Max, he has this all thought out.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Not a lot of inflection, most of the characters sound the same. He just is reading it, I know that he is reading it but he just does not draw you into the story. J.D. has a rich voice, he just needs to use it more.

Was The Racketeer worth the listening time?

Not really, I had a hard time finishing it.

Caution! The narrator will put you to sleep.

Where does The Racketeer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

J. D. Jackson reads so slowly I felt myself age as I listened. This audiobook ranks at the bottom of my list.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Couldn't make it to the ending. I'm old and don't have that much time to waste.

How could the performance have been better?

Jackson should listen to Gerald Doyle to learn how to read an audiobook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Heavens no!

Any additional comments?

Please don't use this narrator again.

Captivating

Full of twist and misdirection. Great character development and fast paced so you did not lose interest.
