Publisher's summary

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.

Who is the Racketeer? And what does he have to do with the judge’s untimely demise? His name, for the moment, is Malcolm Bannister. Job status? Former attorney. Current residence? The Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland.

On paper, Malcolm’s situation isn’t looking too good these days, but he’s got an ace up his sleeve. He knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and he knows why. The judge’s body was found in his remote lakeside cabin. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

What was in the safe? The FBI would love to know. And Malcolm Bannister would love to tell them. But everything has a price—especially information as explosive as the sequence of events that led to Judge Fawcett’s death. And the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday....

Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Great Grisham Ride

Would you listen to The Racketeer again? Why?

Yes, just to pick-up on the clues that I missed in the first listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Racketeer?

When all the pieces start coming together......and you knew the main character was going to make the government bad guys pay for their sins.

Which scene was your favorite?

The ending.....very satisfying.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I spaced it out....hated for it to be over.

Any additional comments?

Great, fast paced "Grisham" ride.....liked the characters immensly but the story was just so much fun.

Better than I expected

It steered a bit away from the usual Grisham formula - - - in a good way.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The storyline was not predictable. The plot kept unfolding throughout the story.

Another Lawyer But Not The Usual Grisham Style

Where does The Racketeer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd put it in the top 15. I bought this book because it was written by John Grisham and I've read all of his books. I didn't like it as much as the others but it is still a good read. It didn't grab me immediately like his other books did. I found Malcolm Bannister not very likeable and that made it hard for me to care about what happened to him. But, as the story progresses, I began to see some good points and then the story twisted and turned and got exciting by the 2nd part.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hmmm. I can't think of a single character that stands out besides Bannister. Vanessa was a good sister as it turned out.

Which character – as performed by J.D. Jackson – was your favorite?

J.D. Jackson was superb in playing Bannister so that character would have to be my favorite even though he wasn't very likeable until the very end.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Grisham's Attorney Not His Usual Good Guy.

A good yarn, typical Grisham

Grisham takes a different tact in this book. A lawyer in jail (hmmm) entertaining but the narration is slow and plodding. The book is predictable, including the ending, but it is an enjoyable story for a long trip in the car.

Great read!!!

I was truly thrilled to read Grisham's first African American protagonist! I want to read more characters of various ethnic backgrounds. The story line if course was great. I wish I knew what happened to Nathan! Great job telling this story John Grisham & of course JD Jackson did an excellent job narrating!

Still a Star

John Grisham still has what it takes to grab me at the first page and keep my attention. I have never been disappointed with anything he has written. This book stands well next to the Bretheren, and the Client.
