Publisher's summary

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.

Who is the Racketeer? And what does he have to do with the judge’s untimely demise? His name, for the moment, is Malcolm Bannister. Job status? Former attorney. Current residence? The Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland.

On paper, Malcolm’s situation isn’t looking too good these days, but he’s got an ace up his sleeve. He knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and he knows why. The judge’s body was found in his remote lakeside cabin. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

What was in the safe? The FBI would love to know. And Malcolm Bannister would love to tell them. But everything has a price—especially information as explosive as the sequence of events that led to Judge Fawcett’s death. And the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday....

Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

A different storyline from other Grisham novels.

What did you love best about The Racketeer?

I typically enjoy John Grisham books, but sometimes they all run together, and I can't remember specific plot lines or characters. This book, while still definitely a Grisham novel, felt different than his most recent ones. The main character IS a lawyer, but he is in prison, so it's a more unique approach in that way.

Have you listened to any of J.D. Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I grew to like the narrator. At first, he was a little too slow for me. I like more fast paced narrators, usually. But, his style and speed really fit the novel well.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy Grisham books, this one is excellent. It kept me interested, and I found myself anxious to get back into the car to find out what happened. I love Grisham's 3rd person omniscient narration; I feel like it keeps the reader in more suspense.

One of John Grisham's Best

If you could sum up The Racketeer in three words, what would they be?

To me this book was different from the rest of John Grisham's books but excellent in every way. The story line was great and the ending was a surprise. All in all I thoroughly enjoy every thing about the book! I couldn't quit listening to it.

John Grisham delivers again

What did you love best about The Racketeer?

An interesting plot that captivates you within minutes and keeps you interested until the end.

What did you like best about this story?

Captivating.

What does J.D. Jackson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

J.D. Jackson brought the personality of the characters to life, enabling the movie screen in my mind to visualize them with extreme clarity.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This was a book I listened to in one sitting. My wife accused me of being anti social.

Any additional comments?

An interesting, complex plot. The authors note at the end was anti climatic. I was surprised as a few of the characters could not of held the jobs or owned the types of buisiness they did being convicted felons. Artistic license I suppose, but that was the only disappointment in the novel. John Grisham Delivers once again.

Great Grisham Ride

Would you listen to The Racketeer again? Why?

Yes, just to pick-up on the clues that I missed in the first listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Racketeer?

When all the pieces start coming together......and you knew the main character was going to make the government bad guys pay for their sins.

Which scene was your favorite?

The ending.....very satisfying.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I spaced it out....hated for it to be over.

Any additional comments?

Great, fast paced "Grisham" ride.....liked the characters immensly but the story was just so much fun.
