Publisher's summary

From the locked archives of the Vatican to the overgrown jungles of Ethiopia, an unlikely trio begins a deadly search for the Holy Grail. Two journalists and a beautiful photographer are traveling together in a broken down Jeep while covering the 1975 Ethiopian civil war. Both men fall in love with the woman and that complicates things.

When the trio winds up lost in the jungle, in the no man's land between the fighting factions, they take cover and dig in for the night. In their hiding place, they encounter a dying man who tells them an amazing and quite unbelievable story. But for some reason - one that they grapple with for the rest of their journey - that night they believe.

The dying man is a priest who has been imprisoned for 40 years because - as he tells it - he found the Holy Grail. This night he has escaped from the prison because it was bombed during the day's fire fight. Unfortunately, the priest was hit, too, so his freedom only lasts for one short night. But it's long enough for Father Armando to describe for our journalists the location of Christ's cup from The Last Supper - and it's long enough to make them believe his story....

Thus begins their quest - a deadly adventure that pits them against the Vatican, murderous tribesmen, shadowy assassins, fanatical Coptic monks and, ultimately, against the powers of the Grail itself.

In the best Nelson DeMille tradition, The Quest takes listeners on a heart-pounding, thrilling ride, as well as to quite a few good bars in Rome. Against the backdrop of a legend that has lasted 2,000 years, and with a love affair influencing many decisions, good eventually triumphs - but at a steep price.

The Quest to make money

I am a true Fan of Nelson DeMille and Scott Brick and when I heard The Quest was coming out I could not wait even with the delays which made it that much sweeter. Normally I just tell my wife its “DeMille and Brick” and she knows she lost me for the duration. So when I started to listen, I was ready!! But when I fell asleep three times before the first two hours I knew this was not for me. Scott Brick could not save this book. I really was looking for a new book from DeMille since the Panther was not his best work. All I can say is save your credits for the next DeMille book as I wasted mine this time..

Story was ok, but the characters weren't likeable

When you read the Amazon reviews, you'll see that DeMille fans are mad because this book was released from the 1970's with a few "updates." So do note that this is a story written decades ago, slightly updated, and released on Audible.

The idea of the story is fun. There is some good action and great and menacing bad guys. DeMille also paints a great picture of the surroundings and the scene so you really feel like you are there with the characters. Unfortunately, the three to four main characters are shallow, poorly developed, and not likable. The characters don't even like each other. There are suspenseful action scenes which are great, but whenever the characters interact with each other, they are at best neutral and uncaring and at worst, snarky and hostile.

The story was interesting for about the first 2/3's of the book, but then fell apart because I just didn't care about the characters. By the very end, I was rolling my eyes as it disintegrated into an empty shell.

Scott Brick is great, really great. I enjoyed the story longer because he was the narrator.

Save your money for the next NEW DeMille

Wow. I'm a huge Nelson DeMille fan and this was a dud. I made it over 1/2 through the book but just couldn't continue anymore. I thought about trying the double-time option but figured I was not interested and would move on to one of the other jillions of books I've bought from Audible. Scott Brick did a fine job but as another reviewer said, even he couldn't save this.

Slow, meaningless, nothing like what we all expect from Nelson DeMille as he's been writing these last many years. This one should have stayed in a drawer, I'm sorry to say.

Disappointing to Fans

When I heard that this book was a "rerelease", I was worried with good reason. DeMille must have a bad case of writer's block to inflict this again on his followers. It is a weak version of "The Da Vinci Code" at best. Many issues that I thought would be key--how do they get the treasure out of a war zone and why do the key players belong together?--were resolved in a few paragraphs while many other chapters were devoted to minutiae. Please don't waste your time.

Why?

Why was this book published? I rarely walk away from a book after investing several hours, but I have no interest whatsoever in finishing it. I think I will go back and read some of his older books to remember why he is one of my favorite authors

Something was lacking

Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite authors. I have every available audio book that I can get. However, something about this book did not live up to par.

The premise was interesting, but I found it a little boring. This is just my humble opinion.

I will continue to buy books by this author. I especially liked the John Corey series, which is more of the genre that I like.

Enjoyed It

I see that The Quest is getting a lot of criticism but I enjoyed it as a typical DeMille book. The narration by Scott Brick made it feel like another sarcastic John Corey story. It kept my attention throughout.
