Publisher's Summary

1666: The monastery at Andrechs has long been a pilgrimage destination, but when the hangman's daughter, Magdalena; her doctor husband, Simon; and their two small children arrive there, they learn that the monks have far larger concerns than saying Mass and receiving alms. It seems that once again the hangman's family has fallen into a mysterious and dangerous adventure.

Two monks at the monastery experiment with cutting-edge technology, including a method of deflecting the lightning that has previously set the monastery ablaze. When one of the monks disappears and his lab is destroyed, foul play is suspected. Who better to investigate than the famed hangman Jakob Kuisl? But as the hangman and his family attempt to solve the mystery of the missing monk, they must deal with the eccentric denizens of the monastery and villagers who view the monks' inventions as witchcraft that must be destroyed at all costs.

This thrilling fourth entry in the Hangman's Daughter series features scheming monks, murderous robots, and the action and intrigue that never seem to cease when the Kuisls are on a case.

The fourth in the Hangman's Daughter series. All are excellent. Intend to read all of his books. You would get more reviews out of me if you didn't require so many words.

The great characters bring this elaborate 17th century novel to life. The narration made a great story more entertaining.

    "Another Great Hangman Story"
If you could sum up The Poisoned Pilgrim in three words, what would they be?

    A great giggle.

What other book might you compare The Poisoned Pilgrim to and why?

I have read all of the Hangman Stories so far and this is far from my favorite but I liked the playful air. I also enjoyed the relationships in the story between the Hangman, his daughter and now son-in-law. The monks were another story and quite the opposite of what you would expect the monks to be.

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

His performances are so good that I cannot imagine the Hangman without his voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Things are not what they seem to be...

    Any additional comments?

The Hangman series is excellently written and read. I anxiously await the next one if there is one. The story was action packed and with so much going on in the book, you were beginning to wonder how this all would come together. It really does come together somewhat but not as you would imagine. Grover does such a great job of unraveling the characters. Loved it.

"Feel like I'm a part of it"

Even in book 4 of this story line I am intrigued. I want for the characters. I feel right along with them, I get frustrated when they do, my heart races with them and breaks with them as well and I feel like I am a part of the story. I am eager for my next Jakob Kuisl fix.

    "Good but not Great"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. Good narration and decent story line coupled with interesting characters is never a waste of time.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes and no. The story would drag at times and other instances it felt rushed. Of all the Hangman's Daughter series i've read this was the most obvious in terms of figuring out who the villan was.

    Any additional comments?

I would definately buy this book if I purchased the other books in the series. The writing is good and the characters are memorable. I would definately not start with this book because too much of the characters actions and behaviors can only be understood by reading the books in order.

    "This series is phenomenal!"

This series is really great! I'm looking forward to going back and reading/listening to them again. Grover Gardner does a terrific job of narrating. He does good character voices, his voice is pleasant to listen to, his timing is terrific. My only negative comment is- although I realize this series is called The Hangman's Daughter- these books need less of the daughter, and more of the hangman! Magdalena and Simon are like Scooby-Doo with the idiotic way they're always running around, getting in everyone's business, screwing up, and bickering. Need more Kuisl- the hangman rocks! I guess the series is pretty historically accurate though, people were idiots back then. Every time anything bad happens, it's "the devil!" and the ignorant townspeople rise up in arms without any consideration or logic. It makes my blood boil when there's a part where the townspeople are accusing or harassing the Hangman and his family just for doing the job the townspeople hired them to do. But, those were the times, and that's good writing by the author!

"Good mystery and a bit of history as a bonus"

Not knowing much about the 1600s, this was a good insight into that era. I am relying of course on the author's research, which seems to me entirely believable. The characters are well developed and likable. I have listened to all the books in this series and I recommend them. If you are a mystery lover as I am, it is a departure from the modern detective novels but make no mistake, it is a well crafted mystery series. Worth the credit and the time. Enjoy.

"Okay but not as good as the rest."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If they have read any of the other books I would recommend they read this.

If you’ve listened to books by Oliver Pötzsch and Lee Chadeayne (translator) before, how does this one compare?

I listened to the other three "Hangman's Daughter" books, they were all about the same in terms of narration, which is great.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

Without a doubt it was Jakob Kuisl. Simon comes in second.

Was The Poisoned Pilgrim worth the listening time?

Only because I enjoyed the adventures of Kuisl and company. Probably should have ended at 3.

    "Good book - wrong narrator"

I enjoyed the setting, the plot, and the scientific knowledge known in that era, but I thought the narrator was a bad choice for this particular book. He sounded to me like he should be reading a hardboiled modern detective story. I thought it was the wrong tone for the book. It made it very difficult to stay immersed in that time period.
