Publisher's summary

American-born spy and code-breaker extraordinaire Maggie Hope secretly navigates Nazi-occupied France to find two brave women during the darkest days of World War II in the latest novel in this New York Times best-selling series - "a treat for WWII buffs and mystery lovers alike" (Booklist, on The Prime Minister's Secret Agent).

Maggie Hope has come a long way since serving as a typist for Winston Churchill. Now she's working undercover for the Special Operations Executive in the elegant but eerily silent city of Paris, where SS officers prowl the streets in their Mercedes and the Ritz is draped with swastika banners. Walking among the enemy is tense and terrifying, and even though she's disguised in chic Chanel, Maggie can't help longing for home.

But her missions come first. Maggie's half-sister, Elise, has disappeared after being saved from a concentration camp, and Maggie is desperate to find her - that is, if Elise even wants to be found. Equally urgent, Churchill is planning the Allied invasion of France, and SOE agent Erica Calvert has been captured, the whereabouts of her vital research regarding Normandy unknown. Maggie must risk her life to penetrate powerful circles and employ all her talents for deception and spycraft to root out a traitor, find her sister, and locate the reports crucial to planning D-Day in a deadly game of wits with the Nazi intelligence elite.

Critic reviews

"You will grieve with Paris. You will be outraged by the destruction. You will be terrified for all the heroes, be there with them every step, and care desperately that they succeed and survive. And perhaps above all, like me, you will be overwhelmed with their sacrifice for the freedom we still enjoy." (Anne Perry, New York Times best-selling author of the Pitt and Monk Series)
"This has to be Maggie Hope's most exciting adventure yet. Vivid and fast-paced, crammed with authentic detail, The Paris Spy is an extraordinary trip through the edgy drama of wartime Paris, skillfully plotted and studded with cameos of real historical figures." (Jane Thynne, author of the Clara Vine series)
" The Paris Spy is a new mystery you won't put down until the absolutely stunning conclusion. Only Susan Elia MacNeal - and the extraordinary Maggie Hope - could wrap such a tale of courage and betrayal around a secret that will cost lives and honor to protect." (Charles Todd, New York Times best-selling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge series and the Bess Crawford series)

A Good Entry

This is a good entry on the series. I thought the characters were well developed and the reader is left with a complex ending. Perhaps a bit too much retrospect in the middle that could have been replaced with action....but overall, if you like the series, you will like this book.

The BEST Yet!

Maggie hope is amazing. She can think, act, scheme, lie, fly a plane, save lives --all while keeping a clear head and fighting for the right cause. She's not totally infallible, but in The Paris Spy, Susan Elia MacNeal places Maggie in the most important turning points of WW2. So far....

Couldn’t catch my breath

This is high suspense all the way, with gut wrenching details. Not for the faint of heart. Good writing and great characters but a horrible cliffhanger at the end. I’m not sure I can handle the next one.

Enjoyable

I have the whole series. I can't wait for the next book to come out. If you haven't heard these books you're missing out. The reader is awesome!

Another exciting Maggie hope adventure!

I have been hooked on this author since “Princess Elizabeth’s spy” and this book certainly did not disappoint. I do, however, have an issue with the narrator, who becomes very “Sing songie”.

I almost gave up on this one!

This book was upsetting almost from the beginning to the end. Too much fact vs fiction. Too much torturing and death of characters we’ve become attached to. On the other side, I understand this is based on reality and as such, I think it was very well written and made the listener (reader) understand how things were at that time. I probably will get the next book because I’m too involved with the whole series not too.

Like the book, not the reader.

I've enjoyed this series, including this book. The setting in time is interesting to me, as are stories of the role of women in the war. The reader doesn't do a great job of differentiating the voices of different characters, which can be confusing. Also, the accents of characters aren't consistent throughout the book. Finally, the reader's rhythmic modulation is predictable, isn't related to the words she is speaking, and ultimately is very tedious. I think I'll avoid any other audio books she reads.

a little wordy

it seemed like the author had a word count she had to meet so she described things in detail that did not need to be. setting the scene is one thing but she went over the top this time. i am sure the book would have been at least an hour shorter. BUT other then that it was a great read.

Excellent series!

Another installment is a 5 star story and a 5 Star audio performance. I can’t wait for the next book to be written. The book narrator does a great job - sometimes I am sure there is more than one because the characters are so distinctive. The plot was interesting and hAd enough depth to keep me on the “edge of my read”. I wish all audio books were so good.
