Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Nelson DeMille returns with another heart-pounding John Corey thriller—this time including Corey’s FBI agent wife Kate Mayfield...and their mission is to catch an elusive terrorist mastermind before he catches them.

Anti-terrorist Task Force agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, have been posted overseas to Sana'a, Yemen—one of the most dangerous places in the Middle East. While there, they will be working with a small team to track down one of the masterminds behind the USS Cole bombing: A high-ranking Al Qaeda operative known as The Panther. Ruthless and elusive, he's wanted for multiple terrorist acts and murders—and the US Government is determined to bring him down, no matter the cost. As latecomers to a deadly game, John and Kate don't know the rules, the players, or the score. What they do know is that there is more to their assignment than meets the eye—and that the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Filled with breathtaking plot turns and told in John Corey's inimitable voice, The Panther is a brilliant depiction of one of the most treacherous countries in the world and raises disturbing questions about whether we can ever know who our enemies—or our allies—really are.

Not his best

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The wise cracking Cory was over the top. I have always enjoyed the John Cory character, but in this story, he became annoying. Also, Kate came off as more bitchy than usual.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was exciting.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick seldom disappoints, and this was no exceptpion. I think Scott Brick really is John Cory, or could that be vice vesa?

Was The Panther worth the listening time?

Yes, I'll never turn down a DeMille book.

Any additional comments?

Maybe I've just listened to too much of these characters wise cracks and bitchy behavior too many times, because I believe they do need to be refreshed or retired.

Very good but…

The narrator doing John Corey’s wife’s voice was very very annoying. He should’ve just announced it was her words and done it in his own voice

Not up to DeMille par

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The story was captivating and certainly kept my attention during long commutes. However, I expect better from Nelson DeMille. The story became predictable and left an obvious sequel opening.

Would you be willing to try another book from Nelson DeMille? Why or why not?

Yes; he is one of my favorite authors and does not normally disappoint.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes - the action alone will make it a great movie.

Another good read by DeMille

The Panther was a good second to DeMille's The Lion's Game. The most enjoyable aspect was the character of John Cory who never disappoints. I just love this guy when he's sarcastic. He had a lot more humor going for him in this novel. It took the edge off the suspense, but then I welcomed the change of mood. I've read about twelve of DeMille's novels and would rank them all pretty high on the list; so I'm a big fan.

Moreover, if Scott Brick is narrating, you can bet every minute of listen will be worthwhile.

Nelson DeMille does it again

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. The Panther has the same plot thread as DeMilles'other John Cory stories but the sarcasim is all new.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot isn't the best part of the book. It is being in the head of John Cory and participating in his sarcastic view of the situation. Although, the plot is well thought out and detailed.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Outstanding!!!!! Scott Brick captures the characters perfectly and paints a picture in your mind.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Probaably when Cory el al decide there has been enough killing. An unusual soft side of Cory.

Any additional comments?

Read it!!!! Enjoy!!!

Good book but a bit drawn out at times. I personally like some of his other books better. I'm finished

Concise, believable plot. Eats the Lion for lunch

Who was your favorite character and why?

I found myself really liking John Corey in this novel. In the Lion novels I found him quite annoying, but other than using "...right" in almost every sentence I enjoyed the character.

It was interesting to find out after the fact than Tom Brennan is former DeMille hero as well. He was an interesting character.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, many of them. I think Scott Brick is the best performer that Audible has.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed listening to this novel. I found myself really hating the Lion's Game by the end of that book, so I was a bit dubious at first with the Panther. I was very happy with it overall.

John Corey can be annoying, but not every hero can be Isaac Bell ;)
