Publisher's summary

An unexpected gift has arrived for Carol Farley this Christmas: an envelope bearing a newspaper clipping and no return address. There, blurred but unmistakable, is a photo of a man missing for years and feared dead, Carol's father. It is a siren calling her to a world she has never known, to a place of ancient majesty and blood-chilling terror.

Now, surrounded by towering pyramids on Mexico City's Walk of the Dead, a frightened yet resolute young woman searches for a perilous truth and for the beloved parent she thought was gone forever. But there are dark secrets lurking in the shadows of antiquity, a conspiracy she never imagined, and enemies who are determined that Carol Farley will not leave Mexico alive.

Not bad

This is one of Elizabeth Peter's earlier books. Some of the story is a little dated but as usual Ms Peter makes you want to be where the book describes, in this case deep in Mexico around the ruins. The characters are good but certainly not Amelia or Radcliff:)

Not her best

Carol heads to Mexico to see the father she hasn't seen since he abandoned her and her mother 10 years before. She finds herself embroiled in sinister plots. Sounds like a great plot for Elizabeth Peters, right? Somehow, she doesn't deliver. A very dated work, especially when one looks at the drug scene today, but the story isn't too bad if one keeps that in mind. This is one of her earliest works, and there is none of the humor I usually see in her books. That is a huge disappointment. The narrator does a great job with lackluster material. I love Elizabeth Peters' books. I don't love the one.

One of My Favorites

This is one of my favorite Elizabeth Peters novels. The narrator was a bit wooden at times, but overall it was great.

Plot doesn’t come until the end

The audible book is over 300 minutes and it didn’t get to the plot until the last 70 minutes. I kept waiting for a twist or turn and it never happened until the end. The narration is very monotone. Not many character fluctuations so it was difficult to know when she changed from one character to the next.

Different but very good.

I have read quite a few of books written by Elizabeth Peters, This one is so different from the others. Once I got past the idea that it was not like her others, I really enjoyed it. Give it a listen....like I said, different but really good.

Great title but disappointing & dislike reader

Is there anything you would change about this book?

1) The reader. 2) Carol seems to level-headed & smart but then inexplicably gets a completely wrong-headed theory when the identity of the bad guy was SO obvious... Who Tom Andres was also became obvious but Carol overlooked it...3) Romance (reciprocated(!)) came totally out of left field

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Rather abrupt.

How could the performance have been better?

Not read in such an offhand contained tone. Sounds bored a lot.

Could you see The Night of Four Hundred Rabbits being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really.Maybe Cate Blanchett for Carol? I definitely vote for Taylor Kitsch for Ivan!!!Danny? Ashton Kutcher (20 years or so ago).

Any additional comments?

I started this book & stopped & started & stopped & finally plowed forward and it got good and then Carol's solution went off in this totally wrong direction and I was going, "No, no, no!" and "Get out of there!" and she didn't listen. Then she got in serious danger and then wham! - it was over. Would have liked a little more on the conclusion. I'm inferring but not even totally sure of the final body count....
