Publisher's summary

Ex-cop Jack Carpenter is the type of guy criminals avoid, so he's surprised to receive a summons from Florida state prison's death row. Staving off his rendezvous with Old Sparky one appeal at a time, notorious serial killer Abb Smith wants Carpenter to find his grandson.

Even stranger, the case involves Heather Rinker, a childhood friend of Jack's daughter. After making some bad choices in her short life, Heather now desperately needs Jack's help to save both herself and her young son from a murderer's grasp.

Good Story, but odd flaws

I like James Swain and I've read all his books. This one is odd. It's almost like it was read from a galley proof. It's full of grammatical errors (in the third person narrative, not the dialogue). It has odd mistakes (like calling shotgun shells "bullets" and misnaming an Eric Clapton album). It has errors in vocabulary.

The story is good and moves along, but it doesn't see as well crafted as other books by this author. The characters are more cliched than in other works. The narration bugs a bit too. The narrator uses the voices for all the male cops in this story that are so similar as to be very hard to distinguish. It won't stop me from buying other books by Swain, but if this was the first one I'd ever read, I'm not sure I'd keep reading him.

Utterly disappointing

I chose this title after enjoying King of Tides and am very disappointed in not only the story, but also the narration.

The story is unrealistic and boringly predictable. The protagonist works with a detective he trained, yet she has zero investigative skills. Her dialogue, and others, are only to boost his machismo.

The narrator’s depiction of women and other races is downright offensive. Women are portrayed as breathless and ignorant, rival detectives are loud and obnoxious, Hispanic and African American characters sound like they’re from culturally exploitive film while the protagonist is the smartest man in the room with his deep, gravelly voice.

The 19th century is calling and wants this disaster of an audiobook back.

Good book, just ignore the voice over artist

I had read this book as a paperback before this, and loved it. Jack Carpenter is a submersible protagonist and the storyline is riveting. The narrator however, no. He adds accents to characters that don't need one, he attempts to soften his voice for female characters that don't need the lilt in tone, just read the book. You're paid to read a book. Probably the dream job for all of us and you make it seem like it's required to add flair.

Interesting but Unbelievable.

The premise of the story itself was interesting but the writing is a little choppy, with the characters underdeveloped and unbelievable. The loose cannon ex-cop is able to repeatedly make huge advancements on the case using the smallest details. The way the women are read is almost insulting.

Night Stalker

the story was quite like nothing I have listen to but I got into it and could not figured out who did it til the end. So I like the book and hope to see what else this author has to say.

5 star mystery, all around!

What a relief to read a really good detective/mystery without all the raunchy language and sex! I'll be looking for more of Swain's books. great story, great mystery, great character development!
