"Out of order stories, but a good listen"

For what ever reason, the stories aren't in the order that they were recorded in, so it is a little confusing when they hint at the next episode that either already happened, or is so far down the line you'd forget. Other than that it's a good listen, The advertisement can be a little annoying at first, but there is a certain charm to the way that they did these advertisements back in the day that you just don't see anymore.

    "Old Radio at it's best"
If you could sum up The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: 60-Episode Set in three words, what would they be?

The characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are played brilliantly by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. If you don't like old radio and Sherlock Holmes, this may not appeal to you.It is a walk back to another era with some frankly loveable actors who never fail to entertain.

What did you like best about this story?

Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone as actors and the introduction given each week by Dr Watson and Harry Bartel.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    All

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it is designed to listen to an episode at a time.

    Any additional comments?

Come on Watson, the game's afoot...............

    "The Undoing of Sherlock"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one I can think of.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: 60-Episode Set?

The utter disappointment of the quality of the recordings.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Basil Rathbone?

This does not apply to my issue with the stories.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

The recordings were scratchy, the commercials ( a VERY important part of the experience) were cut short in what I assume was an effort to save space and time. I have some of these stories on tape and the quality is outstanding. I would absolutely NOT recommend this set to anyone as an audio book.

I was a 'readaholic' for most of my life. I started crochet and other hobbies. That took away from my reading time. I discovered audio books at the library. That set me off. now, that I am older my eyes make it too difficult to read. So I now am a very diligent audio book listener!

"Good for those who enjoy OTR"

The biggest complaint I have is that the episodes are not in order. The announcer and Dr Watson talk about past and future cases. It is irritating when reference is given to a past show or the following show that is several stories down the line. That said these are very enjoyable. I enjoy the combination of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. They are among the best pairs for Holmes and Watson. I must make this comment. I noted that a reviewer complained about ads for 'deceased' products or items. Most OTR were on air live and before audiences. It is easy to hear mistakes and more in these performances. In this case, the ads are a part of the show. Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson talks with the announcer and this leads into the commercial in some instances. I have some Old Time Radio where the ads have been for whatever reason edited out. The time of several minutes of dead space filled with 'elevator' music. That is not enjoyable to me. I hope that for future OTR a little care is taken to put episodes in order.

    "Great show, sub-par compilation"

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio shows, with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, are wonderfully entertaining and enjoyable (the non Rathbone/Bruce shows, not so much). The, very big, problem I have with this set, is that the shows are not in any discernable order. The non Rathbone/Bruce shows are interspersed throughout the regular ones, though chronologically they came after. Plus, when Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson) mentions "next week's episode," what he mentions is not what you hear on this set. Great acting by Rathbone and Bruce; entertaining story lines by Baucher and Green; lousy set production by PDQ AudioWorks.

I'm a little too young to remember these old radio shows. All the new nuances that you hear are extraordinary. I will listen again to these Icons again.

    "Could have been better"

I was disappointed in this as the production values are quite poor. The episodes are in no order what so ever so the actors chop and change , the references to the next episode at the end of each make no sense and the sound isn't brilliant- I know they are old recordings but some episodes are unlistenable to through headphones. Some of the same episodes are available on Murder By Moonlight where the quality is better so I'd suggest you download that instead.

It's a shame as the stories and actors are great just let down by the reproduction efforts at PDQ.

    "Period piece"

Don't expect award winning radio, but this does have some charm. I wish they had arranged them in some order, even if episodes have been lost. Nigel Bruce's avuncular Watson amuses; doctors must have been less academic in those days (London graduates at least!). Rathbone is of course one of the classic Holmes actors, and the other 2 don't cut it so well. It's not Radio 4, either, so ads almost exceed story. (Thank God for the BBC!) You'll know all about "Petri wine" - strange to hear of such luxury in USA when wartime Europe was on rations, at best - but at least it becomes the subject of gentle banter between presenter and Bruce. (The recurring naughty puppies help, too, but it's so strange to hear such open encouragement of smoking, drinking and eating to our 21st century ears.). Some of the stories are based on Doyle but most not, and many don't really hold together, if you think about them too much, but are ingenious and entertaining if you accept them as intended - a lot worse turns up on modern TV! There's also a Public Service Announcement function sometimes, encouraging buying Victory Bonds, supporting troops overseas and returning veterans, fundraising research into polio. I liked that little bit of social history, just wish it was in order.
